Patton Oswalt Helps Twitter Critic Raise $28K for Medical Bills: 'I'd Be Angry Too'

Patton Oswalt is giving a lesson in compassion.

The comedian, 49, showed one critic some love on Thursday after he realized the social media user was suffering from serious medical problems.

It all started with a NSFW tweet from Oswalt, in which he slammed President Donald Trump, saying, “you’re going to resign.”

Twitter user Michael Beatty tweeted back at Oswalt, “I just realized why I was so happy you died in Blade Trinity!”

Oswalt initially responded to Beatty’s jab with a joke.

“Dude, I already know: ‘cuz ‘…one more second of you on screen and my heart would belong to Patton Oswalt.’ I get told this at least twice a week by Trump supporters. It always makes me smile and I’m grateful and blessed,” he wrote.

But after taking a look at Beatty’s timeline, Oswalt discovered that the man was fighting to pay medical bills following a two-week hospital stay after falling into a coma due to diabetes and sepsis complications.

Oswald quickly traded his humor for generosity, sharing Beatty’s GoFundMe page with his 4.46 million Twitter followers.

“Aw, man. This dude just attacked me on Twitter and I joked back but then I looked at his timeline and he’s in a LOT of trouble health-wise. I’d be pissed off too,” Oswalt tweeted “He’s been dealt some s—– cards — let’s deal him some good ones. Click and donate — just like I’m about to.”

Oswalt donated $2,000 to the fund, which has since reached over $30,000 – far surpassing the original $5,000 goal – at the time of publication.

Beatty responded to Oswalt, saying that the comedian’s support left him emotional and speechless.

“Patton. You have humbled me to the point where I can barely compose my words. You have caused me to take pause and reflect on how harmful words from my mouth could result in such an outpouring,” Beatty tweeted. “Thank you for this and I will pass this on to my cousin who needs help. A cascade.”

Beatty continued: “@pattonoswalt managed to not only let me slide on a rough tweet to him but started something that has me reevaluating friendships and productive dialogue regardless of political affiliation. He’s a good man and I hope that I can meet him one day to cement a relationship.”

After seeing the effect Oswalt had on Beatty, the comedian encouraged his followers to continue to pay it forward.

“What a great way to end the day. If you want to pay this forward, maybe find a GoFundMe for a furloughed government worker who’s feeling the pinch?” he wrote. “Or make a big-ass haul o’ goodies to your local food bank? Something? Anything?”

In an interview with the Washington Post, Beatty said Oswalt’s generosity has caused him to “reevaluate” his opinion of the comedian.

“After today, I tend to think I’m a tempered Republican,” Beatty said. “I’m having to reevaluate some of the things I’ve gone along with. The biggest thing I learned about [Oswalt] is that he is a man of character.”
