In this case, first was the worst.

Like all reality competition shows, the long-running Dancing with the Stars eliminates someone in the early weeks of the season. And like all reality competition contestants will say, being the first to go is not a fun feeling.

Here, a look back on the stars who've been eliminated first in each of the 30-plus seasons of the ABC series — and what they had to say about their brief time in the ballroom.

Matt Walsh, Season 32

Joking about his involvement on the show, Walsh said, “You don’t normally see comedians doing sexy dances."

Partnered with Koko Iwasaki, the two danced the cha cha to a hazardous-waste themed "Poison," and by the end, had the judges singing along.

However, the fun wasn't enough to keep them in the competition, and the pair went home with a score of 12/30.

The Sex and the City stud and pro Peta Murgatroyd scored a 18/40 for their cha cha to — ironically — the Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams collab, "Get Lucky."

Martin Kove, Season 30

After two weeks of competition, the actor and pro partner Britt Stewart were sent home. Also in the bottom two were Bling Empire star Christine Chiu and her pro partner Pasha Pashkov.

The Cobra Kai star was at the bottom of the leaderboard again for week 2 after he and Stewart earned a score of 15 out of 40 for their cha cha. The week prior, the Karate Kid alumnus received the lowest score with a 13 out of 40 for the paso doble.

Kove and Stewart's total after week 1 and week 2 was only 28 out of 80.

Charles Oakley, Season 29

At the end of the second episode, host Tyra Banks announced that Tiger King's Carole Baskin and former NBA player Oakley, with partner Emma Slater, were both in the bottom two — and that the judges (Bruno Tonioli, Carrie Ann Inaba and Derek Hough) had to save one of the couples to keep them in the competition.

First, Inaba chose to save Baskin. She was followed by Tonioli, who split the vote by choosing to keep Oakley in the competition.

Breaking the tie was Hough, who decided, "the couple I'm going to save is Carole and Pasha," sending Oakley home.

For their second dance on Tuesday, Oakley and Slater performed a cha-cha and were awarded a 15/30.

Mary Wilson, Season 28

The Supremes singer said goodbye to the ballroom in week two, after scoring a 15/30 on a cha cha with partner Brandon Armstrong.

Reflecting on her short time on DWTS, the singer had nothing but positive things to say.

"It was fabulous," said Wilson. "I enjoyed it so much."

Nikki Glaser, Season 27

Not funny: the comedienne was the first to go in September 2018, on night two of the season premiere.

"You know, it sucks. I'm not going to lie. I really, really like doing this show and I really had such a great time," said Glaser, who earned an 18/30 for her salsa with Gleb Savchenko. "I hope that I just proved that I did the scariest thing I've ever done and I tried my best. … It was so fun! Thank you for having me."

Johnny Damon, Season 26

Double elimination! On the all-athletes season premiere, the reality dance competition asked not one, but two contestants to pack up their dancing shoes. Retired pro baseball outfielder Damon was the first to go, after he received an 18/30 for his foxtrot to John Fogerty's "Centerfield" with partner Emma Slater.

Jamie Anderson, Season 26

Due to season 26's shortened four-week cycle, the competition was extra fierce. Just barely topping Damon's score, Olympic snowboarder Anderson earned a 19/30 for her Viennese Waltz to Avicii's "Feeling Good" with partner Artem Chigvintsev, which ultimately sent them home as well.

Barbara Corcoran, Season 25

The Shark Tank star and partner Keo Motsepe failed to win over the judges with a salsa to Ludacris' "Money Maker." They earned a 14 out of 30, putting them in last place for week 1.

The real estate mogul then got into her grove a little more when she and Motsepe foxtrotted to "Whatever Lola Wants". While, the judges complimented Corcoran's ability to relax during her second number and gave them a better score of 17 out of 30 – it was not enough to advance them in the competition.

"It was such an honor and probably the most exciting thing I've ever done in my whole life," Corcoran said when she heard the news. She reiterated that sentiment while talking to reporters after the show, jokingly adding, "I should stick to real estate!"

Chris Kattan, Season 24

The former SNL funnyman fought back tears while saying goodbye after scoring a 17/40 and 22/40 in weeks one and two. Complications from a broken neck affected Kattan's ability to perform with partner Witney Carson, and he told judges he wished "that my surgery and all that was noted before, but it wasn't, and that's okay. I had an incredible, incredible time."

Jake T. Austin, Season 23

"This caught me by totally off guard. But you know what, you just kind of hope for the best, prepare for the worst and just like go with it," Disney star Austin told PEOPLE of the week one vote. "So again, I did this for my fans. I did something I was so uncomfortable doing. Totally new experience for me. If I can go back, I'd do it all over again. Learning from [partner Jenna Johnson] was the opportunity of a lifetime."

Geraldo Rivera, Season 22

With the election heating up, Rivera and partner Edyta Sliwinska dressed as an imagined President and First Lady Trump hoping to "make dance great again," but the humor wasn't enough to keep them on the show, and a week one score of 13/30 sent them home. "We thought we'd have a laugh," Rivera said when departing.

Chaka Khan, Season 21

Singing icon Khan and partner Keo Motsepe were edged out by Gary Busey, going home in 2015 with a week one score of 15/30. "I enjoyed it. I am so happy to have met everybody. I've made great friends here," she said while bidding the cast and crew farewell.

Redfoo, Season 20

Being sexy and knowing it wasn't enough to keep the LMFAO frontman and partner Emma Slater going in the show's 20th anniversary season in March 2015. "I got the chance. I did my best," he said following his elimination for a jive to "My Sharona" that earned the pair 31 points (but not enough audience votes). "Emma is the best. I wanted to be there for her."

Lolo Jones, Season 19

The Olympian blamed a missed cue in her cha-cha with partner Keo Motsepe for her early departure in September 2014. "There have been three times where I have come so close to an Olympic medal and every time those things happen, people tease me, saying, 'You are a failure in the spotlight,'" she told PEOPLE. "When that dance happened and I had that moment, I was like, 'Here it goes again. Now everybody is going to say I'm a bad dancer.'"

Though they didn't have the lowest scores following their foxtrot to Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea," the competitive swimmer and partner Henry Byalikov saw their Dancing dreams dashed quite quickly in March 2014. "For nine years I've wanted to do this show," Nyad said after her elimination. "I only wish I could've given [Henry] at least a couple more weeks."

Keyshawn Johnson, Season 17

The retired NFL player didn't score a touchdown in the Dancing with the Stars ballroom, where his 18-point samba sent him and partner Sharna Burgess home. "For a guy [who] has never even bopped his head in the car ... [doing this show] is something amazing to me," Johnson told the audience after his elimination. "I had the opportunity to learn."

Dorothy Hamill, Season 16

She had promising Olympic pedigree but figure skater Hamill decided to obey doctor's orders and bow out of the competition, making her and partner Tristan MacManus the first pair to go on Dancing's 16th season. "I have an injury that could be irreparable," Hamill said of her spine. "It would be completely unfair for me to stay in this and have any of these people go home."

After earning just 17 points for her lackluster cha cha with pro partner Tristan MacManus, the Baywatch star was the first of the all-stars to be eliminated in season 15. "She apologized," MacManus told PEOPLE. "She felt like she let me down. My assurances were that she didn't. Obviously she was disappointed to go early, which I was myself. But someone has to leave so others can move on."

Martina Navratilova, Season 14

She is used to winning on the court but the ballroom competition proved too tough for the tennis icon and her partner, Tony Dovolani. "We had a lot of fun," Navratilova said after becoming the first to go on season 14. "I started feeling the dances better. And I really felt so much more confident yesterday than the first week. Go figure."

The NBA star formerly known as Ron Artest and his partner Peta Murgatroyd were season 13's unlucky couple. "I really didn't know how much fun this was going to be," he said after getting the boot. "I didn't know that I would actually want to make an effort to win."
