Eleanor Rosalynn Carter (1927-2023) was an American activist and humanitarian from Plains, Georgia, who served as first lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981. After leaving the White House, she and her husband of 77 years, former President Jimmy Carter, co-founded The Carter Center to promote human rights globally. Carter was well known for her mental health advocacy, and she established the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers to provide support for caregivers. Carter, the second-longest-lived first lady in U.S. history, died at the age of 96, months after receiving a dementia diagnosis.
