James Earl Carter Jr. is an American politician from Georgia. He served one term as the 39th president of the United States, from 1977 to 1981. Prior to his presidency, he was governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. After leaving the White House, he co-founded a human rights organization, The Carter Center, with his wife, Rosalynn Carter. In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize, largely for his post-presidency humanitarian efforts. The longest-living U.S. president in history, Carter entered hospice care in February 2023.
