Sean Paul Says He Won't Retire from Music Until He's 'Dead Like a Tire': 'It Keeps Me Youthful'

"To me, music is a thing that helps you evolve, and it helps to keep you young at the same time, so that’s omnipotent," said the Jamaican dancehall performer

Sean Paul plans to stay busy for as long as possible.

During the 51-year-old Jamaican dancehall musician's time at Wireless Festival in London earlier this month, he opened up to NME about his thoughts on retirement and declared he won't be stepping out of the spotlight anytime soon.

"No, man, me nah retire ’til me dead like a tire. Trust me now, man," Paul told the outlet in a TikTok video, adding: "It gets harder. It do get harder as someone who’s growing older."

"It’s a thing, but it keeps me youthful," continued the "Temperature" performer. "I read a little thing yesterday that said if you attend two concerts or two festivals every month, you’re going to gain nine years on your life, so I’mma live forever! You know what I mean?"

Paul spoke further about his love for entertaining, especially at music festivals. "What I’m saying is this is a synergy and a gathering of people, of like-minded people who want to just party and have fun," he said. "Big up to everybody who attends the festivals with vigor every year, and big up to everybody who puts on these festivals. It’s awesome."

The Grammy winner then got a bit philosophical: "To me, music is a thing that helps you evolve, and it helps to keep you young at the same time, so that’s omnipotent. That’s like God, so big up, God, and big up, music."

Sticking true to his word, Paul's schedule isn't slowing down. After wrapping a string of international festival sets over the past couple months, he's set to perform shows throughout Canada in August and September.

Paul's latest album, Scorcha, was released in 2022, though he's released several singles and collaborations over the past few years — including "Light 'Em Up" with Will Smith for the Bad Boys: Ride or Die soundtrack in June.

With about three decades in entertainment under his belt, Paul's impact goes beyond his own releases at this point. Ice Spice's recent single, "Gimme a Light," samples his 2001 hit "Gimme the Light," and Paul was happy to sign off on the usage.

"They slowed it down a little bit, but her career is so hot right now and I was like, ‘Yo, that’s dope,’" he told NME at Wireless Festival, where Ice, 24, also performed.

"She’s a great artist. She’s out there performing tonight. Everybody was screaming. So I feel good about the vibe," added Paul. "Big up to Ice. Big up to everybody who loves dancehall and reggae culture and who may want a sample or use it or whatever."
