Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin are scheduled to make a spacewalk outside the International Space Station on May 3 at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET. Prokopyev and Petelin will be assisting in the movement of an experiment airlock from the Rassvet module to the Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module.

This is Prokopyev's fifth and Petelin's third spacewalk.

Getting Hot

May 03, 2023 04:58 PM EDT

"It's hot in the sun," one cosmonaut says to his spacewalk companion. Luckily, the sun will set for the spacewalkers by 5:20 p.m. ET — they only had roughly 1 hour of orbital daylight.

Nice View

May 03, 2023 04:56 PM EDT

You can see the beautiful blue oceans of Earth in the background as the cosmonauts perform their tasks for their six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk. Not a bad view for a workday! Prokopyev and Petelin continue to coordinate amongst themselves as they remove plugs from the module they are working with on the Rassvet module.

Here Comes the Sun

May 03, 2023 04:20 PM EDT

The International Space Station has moved into orbital daytime during the spacewalk. Meanwhile, the cosmonauts are talking about the best path to take for their work as they complete their spacesuit and buddy checks.

Spacewalkers Have Exited the Space Station

May 03, 2023 04:13 PM EDT

Both cosmonauts have exited the International Space Station. For the first part of their six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk they will need to configure their spacesuits and do buddy checks. Then they will need to work on the hatch itself to prepare removing the experiment airlock from the Rassvet module then installing it on the Nauka science module.

Meet the Spacewalkers

Learn more about Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, the two cosmonauts who will be performing the spacewalk, as they prepare to exit the International Space Station.

Before this spacewalk, Prokopyev has spent a total of 29 hours and 51 minutes in space and this is his fifth spacewalk. Petelin has spent 14 hours and 20 minutes in space and this is his third spacewalk.

Get Ready for the Spacewalk

May 03, 2023 03:25 PM EDT

Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin will conduct this year's fifth spacewalk at the International Space Station starting at approximately 4:05 p.m. ET.

Commander Prokopyev and Flight Engineer Petelin's spacewalk will last approximately six-and-a-half hours and will involved "removing an experiment airlock from the Rassvet module then installing it on the Nauka science module," according to NASA. Flight Engineer Andrey Fedyaev will assist the spacewalkers from inside the station.
