On Sunday, the style icon, 42, shared some throwback selfie-style photos of her and longtime pal Britney Spears, 41. "17 years ago, Britney and I created the selfie! 👯♀️🤳🏻," Hilton wrote on Instagram. "Tag me in your most epic selfies to celebrate the most iconic invention 🔥✨." In the first couple of photos, Hilton and Spears are huddled up ear-to-ear, smiling for the camera. In the final slide, the two blondes are posed with kissy faces, with Spears rocking some attitude while Hilton wears a sultry expression. What have you done with my invention since then?!" This is not the first time Hilton has cheekily staked her claim in the selfie invention game. In honor of National Selfie Day in 2021, the media personality shared the same shots, which were screen grabs of a 2017 tweet reminding her fans of her self-coined contribution to society. While the heiress is known for creating catchphrases, "that's hot" and "sliving" (a mélange of slaying and living), her selfie invention was challenged by The New York Times, which pointed out that Robert Cornelius took a picture back in 1839 that has now been cited as the first selfie. After Cornelius, the outlet noted that "several gentlemen" held up a box camera "in the familiar selfie position" in 1920, then in a 1934 photo, a Swedish couple named Helmer and Naemi Larrson appeared to be using a selfie stick-like apparatus to take a photo. Still, the majority of Hilton's fans have spoken, and it appears she will always be the sole selfie inventor in their eyes. "Correct," one fan on X responded to her reminder post on Sunday.
