One Direction Is Processing 'the Loss of Our Brother' After Liam Payne's Death: We’re Completely Devastated'

The band shared a joint statement to Instagram revealing they are "completely devastated" following Payne's death at 31 on Wednesday, Oct. 16

One Direction has broken its silence following the untimely death of Liam Payne at 31.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, the surviving band members — Harry Styles, Zayn MalikLouis Tomlinson and  Niall Horan — shared a joint statement on Instagram that said they are processing "the loss of our brother."

"We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing," it began. "In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly."

The statement continued: "The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam. Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry."

Following their group statement, Tomlinson, Malik and Styles each posted individual ones.

Tomlinson said that he "would have loved to share the stage" with Payne again, while Malik expressed he was "beyond devastated." Styles said his "heart breaks" for his "lovely friend."

Made up of Styles, Malik, Tomlinson, Horan and Payne, One Direction was put together by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger during season 7 of X Factor U.K. While the group didn't win their season, they went on to become one of the biggest boy bands in the world, dominating the culture of the early 2010s.

In addition to One Direction, Halsey, Cher Lloyd, Rita Ora and more have shared tributes to Payne following his death.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Payne was pronounced dead after falling multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE. Argentine news channel TN was first to report the news.

In a statement translated from Spanish, Alberto Crescenti (the head of SAME, Buenos Aires' public emergency medical services system) told TN that the British artist fell into the hotel’s internal courtyard.

According to a preliminary autopsy report, Payne died from multiple injuries and "internal and external" hemorrhages after falling from his hotel balcony,

The coroners confirmed to PEOPLE that 25 injuries in the autopsy were "compatible with those caused by a fall from a height" and noted that "the head injuries were sufficient to cause death.

There were also "internal and external hemorrhages" of the skull, thorax, abdomen and limbs that contributed to Payne's death.

Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son Bear Grey, with his ex, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
