In 2017, Thomas' sister Chyna died in a one-car crash in Tacoma. She was 22 at the time. The point guard shocked Celtics fans that day when he suited up for the team's playoff game just one day after Chyna's death. Thomas paid tribute to his sister by wearing sneakers that said, "Chyna, RIP Lil Sis" and ended up scoring 33 points for Boston in the 2017 postseason victory. In a powerful image from that game, Thomas is seen being comforted by his teammate Avery Bradley as he's crying during pregame shootaround. The two athletes grew up together in Tacoma, Washington, before becoming NBA teammates. After that game Bradley said, "I know tonight he was playing for his sister. He was playing for his family," according to NBA.com. "We appreciate that as teammates. He is just an amazing basketball player and a better person, so I’m happy with the way he played tonight, and we just need to continue to fight for him." Close
