Photo: Everett After Practical Magic's 1998 premiere, the fantasy film adaptation has remained a fan-favorite more than two decades later — even among its A-list cast. "I love that movie," Nicole Kidman recalled during a brief reunion with former costar Sandra Bullock at the Academy Awards in 2018. "I showed that movie to my kids. It's a little above their [level of understanding] … But we're really good sisters." Kidman and Bullock continued to forge impressive careers in Hollywood, with the two winning Oscars for Best Actress; Kidman for her role in The Hours (2002) and Bullock for her performance in The Blind Side (2009). While both leads have cultivated their own successes over the years, they are officially reuniting to reprise their Practical Magical characters in the upcoming sequel, as confirmed by PEOPLE in June 2024. "Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that's that," Kidman told PEOPLE. "There's a lot more to tell which is why we go, 'OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.' [We] found a way in." As we wait for Practical Magic 2, head down memory lane with the spellbinding Owens family and the personalities of Maria's Island, and check out what the stars have been up to since the cult classic hit theaters in October 1998. 01 of 12 Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens Sandra Bullock as Sally Owens in 'Practical Magic'; Sandra Bullock arrives at the 'Ocean's 8' premiere in London on June 13, 2018. Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock; David Fisher/REX/Shutterstock Before Bullock charmed audiences as Sally Owens — the reserved older Owens sister — in Practical Magic, she had already starred in the action thriller Speed (1994) and the 1997 sequel, as well as romantic comedies like While You Were Sleeping (1995) and Hope Floats (1998). However, her best was yet to come on-screen. As for her Practical Magic role, Bullock has good memories of filming the supernatural flick, particularly when shooting the singular and oft-talked-about "midnight margaritas" scene — where Bullock and Kidman apparently got tipsy while filming. "[Kidman and I] were talking about when we shot [Practical Magic] together, and we asked her to get the tequila," Bullock said during a red carpet appearance at the 2018 Oscars. "She came back with her own tequila, but we drank it anyway. We were a little drunk." Following her star-turning role in Miss Congeniality (2000), Bullock continued to rack up film credits in Two Weeks Notice (2002), Crash (2004), Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous (2005), Premonition (2007) and The Proposal (2009). In 2010, she nabbed her first Oscar for The Blind Side and was nominated in 2014 for Gravity. Though Bullock's moviemaking pace has slowed since adopting her two children, son Louis and daughter Laila, she was featured in box office hits and Netflix favorites like Ocean's 8 (2018), Bird Box (2018), The Unforgivable (2021), The Lost City (2022) and Bullet Train (2022). She is slated to reprise the role of Sally Owens in the Practical Magic sequel. In August 2023, her longtime partner, photographer Brian Randall, died after a three-year battle with ALS. Bullock and Randall dated from 2015 until his death at the age of 57. Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock; Richard Young/REX/Shutterstock Like Bullock, Kidman was already an established actress before trying her hand at black magic as the carefree and rebellious younger Owens sister. Kidman's fame and on-screen credits continued to grow after the release of Practical Magic, with the actress earning her first Best Actress Oscar nod in 2002 for Moulin Rouge! In 2003, she took home the statuette for The Hours and was nominated again for Rabbit Hole (2010), Lion (2016) and Being the Ricardos (2021). Her other acclaimed films include Cold Mountain (2003), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), Boy Erased (2018) and The Northman (2022). She also made a splash in the TV world with her Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning performance as Celeste Wright on HBO's Big Little Lies. In 2020, Kidman teamed up with Hugh Grant for another HBO series, The Undoing, and followed that up in 2021 on Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers. Since then, Kidman has starred in miniseries like Faraway Downs, Expats and The Perfect Couple, as well as the films A Family Affair (2024) and Babygirl (2024). Along with her confirmed role in the upcoming Practical Magic sequel, the actress is rumored to reunite with her Big Little Lies costars for a third season. Kidman has been married to country superstar Keith Urban since June 2006. The couple shares two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. The Oscar-nominated actress — who already appeared in Grease (1978), Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and The First Wives Club (1996) — has had a successful run on the big and small screen since Practical Magic. She had a memorable turn as the president's wife on The West Wing and a recurring role on The Good Wife. Channing has held other roles on the series Maryland, Julia and Knuckles.
