Mississippi Mom of Two Thought She Was Having Twins, Had Quintuplets Instead: 'Five is a Lot of Babies'

A Mississippi mother who thought she and her husband were having twins got the surprise of a lifetime when they learned they were actually expecting quintuplets!

Ashley and Tyler Meyers of Laurel spoke to Today.com about how things have changed since finding out that their family of four is growing to a family of nine — as the couple are already parents to daughters Paisleigh, 3, and Westlynn, 2. 

In the interview published on Thursday, June 20, Ashley said she purchased a pregnancy test while on a drugstore run for cough syrup after noticing her period was a day late. 

“Not only was the test positive, the line was darker than I’ve ever seen in my life,” she said. 

Preliminary blood work showed that the mom and dad — who recently purchased a new home together — would be having twins. 

“My first thought was ‘Okay. We can handle this,’” Ashley, 26, said. 

However, when the couple went in for an OB-GYN appointment just two weeks later, reality set in. Instead of twins, Ashley would soon be giving birth to quintuplets, two boys and three girls.

“I was in complete shock,” she told Today.com. “I don’t think my husband and I talked to people for two weeks. We just went silent. Five is a lot of babies."

Tyler, 28, was also surprised by the news. 

"I was like, 'How are we going to do this?'" he said. "But you just need to leave it up to God. He is not going to put you in a situation that you can't handle."

Ashley, who is now 25-weeks pregnant and on bedrest, set up a GoFundMe in February on behalf of the couple.

“​​We have 2 beautiful little girls, and are pregnant with FIVE miracle babies,” she wrote. “We just bought a new home and were getting used to our crazy little family of four. But God had BIG BIG plans for us and had chose us to care for five more beautiful babies.”

She noted that any donations from the GoFundMe, which currently sits at $1,000 of their $10,000 goal, would “help with gas and medical expenses. Diapers and wipes.”

“If you can not contribute through money, prayers is what we need also,” she said, while also thanking those who took the time to read about their story. 

Quintuplets occur in roughly one in 60 million births, according to Dr. Rachael Morris, an associate professor of maternal fetal medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, reports Today.com.

In 2023, another Mississippi couple, Haylee and Shawn Ladner, welcomed quintuplets, four identical girls and one boy.
