Millie Bobby Brown Reveals Jake Bongiovi Proposed Underwater: 'We Freaked Out'

Millie Bobby Brown is opening up about how Jake Bongiovi  proposed to her.

The actress, 20, who has been engaged to the son of Jon Bon Jovi since April 2023, appeared on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. 

“Well, I haven’t told anyone this because there are moments, key moments, but I’m like, ‘Fallon is the best’ and also I think this is too good of a story to not tell,” Brown said. “Basically, Jake and I bonded over diving. We love diving, we got our driving licenses together.”

She added that when they were on vacation, Bongiovi, 21, said, “Mil, you got to be up at 8:00 a.m., we’re going on a dive.”

“I was like, ‘8 a.m., dive?’ ... And he’s telling me, ‘We’re going to the same spot we usually go to,’ ” Brown continued. “I’m like, ‘It’s boring, let’s go somewhere new.’ He’s like, ‘No, we have to go to this spot,’ ” she added.

After arriving at the spot, the Stranger Things star explained that they dove many meters under the water. 

“He gives me like a shell and I like, turn it over and it’s a ring,” she recalled.  “And I like, looked at him and he was like,” Brown said as she recreated his facial expression and the bubbles due to Bongiovi being unable to talk underwater.

Raising a thumbs up, she said, “This means, ‘up,’ ‘I want to go up.’ So that would technically mean, ‘No, I don’t want to marry you, I want to go up.’ ”

“So I was like okay,’” Brown explained as she did an “okay” hand symbol. “And I think it was underwhelming, but we freaked out.”

“Anyways he puts the ring on my hand and as I go to show him the ring falls off my finger, plummets like, so fast, it was like a cinematic movie,” she said, adding, “Jake threw himself, like so deep, like the diver was like, ‘You can’t do that, like your ears ... literally your brain will explode.’ ”

Brown continued to describe how Bongiovi threw himself down in the water and did a “cinematic grab, opens and he saved the ring.”

She went on to say that she feels “it’s a reflection of who he is and I feel like we’re always going to have each other's back and if anyone drops the ball, we got it.”

Meanwhile, Brown explained that after Bongiovi saved the ring, they got to the surface of the water, enabling him to ask for her hand in marriage.

After Brown said, “Yes,” Bongiovi explained that he had asked Brown’s mother if he could take her ring to propose, however, Brown’s mother said, “Absolutely not, Jake. You’re not taking my ring down there, I know you’ll drop it.” In the end, Bongiovi performed the underwater proposal with a different ring, presenting Brown with her moms ring back on the boat.

“So when we got up on the boat he was like, ‘This is your mom’s ring and I got it from your parents,’ ” the Enola Holmes star recalled. “And it was very magical and his parents were there and we just looked so disheveled coming out from a dive.”

Brown and Bongiovi first sparked romance rumors in June 2021 after he shared a selfie with her Instagram with the caption, "bff <3.”
