Lainey Wilson Told Taylor Swift How She Watched Her Perform When There Were Only 16 People in the Crowd (Exclusive)

Lainey Wilson had a full circle moment with Taylor Swift. 

The “Heart Like a Truck” singer, 32, told PEOPLE at the Twisters film premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 11 that it was surreal to find out that Swift had been a fan of hers when she herself had been a fan of the “Anti-hero” singer, 34, “for a long time.”

“I actually watched her perform at CMA Fest on the Riverfront stage when she was probably 15. I was 14, and I remember just thinking, man, this girl's future is bright,” Wilson shared. “And there was hardly anybody in the crowd except for me and my family.” 

“And I got to tell her that,” Wilson continued. “And she was like, 'There were, like, 16 people there.' And I said, ‘Well, we were four of them.’ ”

Per iHeartRadio, Wilson previously revealed on the Zach Sang Show podcast that she was “shocked” when the Grammy winner first confessed that she was a fan of hers. “I told her, I said [that] I truly respect her. I think she is freaking awesome,” Wilson shared at the time.

The Yellowstone star went on to say that she was impressed by the trajectory of Swift’s career. “It’s just so cool to see how she’s done this. I think she’s just a boss. I got to see her show this past year and just left there feeling so inspired,” Wilson said.

That isn’t the only parallel the two singers have drawn, as both singers are also dating NFL stars. Wilson recently went public with her relationship with former NFL player Devlin Hodges, 28, while Swift is in a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, 34.

Wilson noted to PEOPLE at the Twisters premiere that it can be difficult for musicians to separate their personal relationships from their very public work. “The truth is, as a female in country music, you gotta make dang sure that you are tending to business, and you're out there whooping ass, and nothing is a distraction,” she explained. “And people sometimes can view that, if you have a boyfriend, at times, they're like, 'Well, she's gonna get married and have babies.' ” 

“And, that's a point of view. But I'm like, guess what? We can do it all,” Wilson added.

When asked if she might bring Hodges out onstage during her ongoing tour like Swift did with Kelce, Wilson joked, “We might. We might.”
