People Editorial Guidelines Updated on July 26, 2024 11:48AM EDT Comments Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are exploring their wild side in Joker: Folie à Deux. A new trailer for the sequel to 2019's Joker debuted on Tuesday, July 23, showing Phoenix back as the disturbed Arthur Fleck. This time, Gaga joins the cast as this adaptation's Harley Quinn — and the two characters are a match made in heaven. Before teasing moments from the two's sinister team-up, the preview opens with a voiceover of Harley telling Arthur, "When I first saw Joker — when I saw you — for once in my life, I didn't feel so alone anymore." Subsequent scenes feature the pair dancing and joking through their antics, with Harley seemingly supporting Joker through his entertainment- and violence-related quests. "You can do anything you want ... you're Joker," she tells him. Lady Gaga/Instagram Margot Robbie Says She Hasn't Spoken to Lady Gaga About Playing Harley Quinn: 'She's Going to Crush It' Todd Phillips returns to direct the new film, following the financial success and critical acclaim of Joker (which, unlike Joker: Folie à Deux, was not a musical). The psychological thriller was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won two, including Best Actor for Phoenix, 49. When they finished filming the sequel in April 2023, Phillips, 53, wrote on Instagram, "That’s a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom." "Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together," he added at the time. Gaga, 38, gave some insight into her Joker role in May, when she told Access Hollywood, "My version of Harley is mine, and it's very authentic to this movie and these characters." "I don't want to give anything from the movie away," she added. "I think it's really something you have to experience in the theater." The A Star Is Born actress also teased, "This film has music, it has dance, it has amazing acting in it." "I loved working with Joaquin, I loved working with Todd," Gaga continued. "I've never done anything like I've done in this movie before, so it's all going to be completely brand new and really fun." Joker: Folie à Deux is in theaters Oct. 4. Close
