Katy Perry Says Her Level of Respect for Her Parents 'Went Through the Roof' After Becoming a Mom

Katy Perry is reflecting on her childhood with a whole new outlook.

As a guest on the Wednesday, Sept. 4 episode of Call Her Daddy, the musician, 39, opened up about her experience growing up following her parents' "very strict version of Christianity," and how that has impacted her perspective as a mother to daughter Daisy Dove, 4, whom she shares with her fiancé Orlando Bloom.

"It was a little volatile," Perry tells host Alex Cooper of her religious upbringing, adding that, "After having my child — I always respected my mother — but the level of respect for my mother, my parents in general, it just went through the roof."

She then jokes, "Because I was like, 'How did you keep us alive? Without iPads?'"

The "Teenage Dream" singer continues to call her mother a "saint" for the sacrifices she made throughout her childhood.

"I do think my parents, with the tools that they had and their own upbringings, really did the best that they could," she says. "And my mother, you know, she is a saint. She sacrificed every step of the way. She was the last to sit at the dinner table every single time."

When explaining how Perry's previous lack of wealth is what motivated her to make it big, the singer says, "Some of my alpha-ing, which is now a lot more imbalance, is maybe a reaction to all of that."

"Like, Oh, we didn't grow up with money. I'm gonna make it. Let's go," she recalls of her "alpha" thoughts from growing up, "Because I'm never gonna be in this position. I don't want to feel this feeling again, But I'm aware of that now."

Last week, Perry looked back on the day she gave birth to her daughter Daisy, sharing a video on her Instagram Stories of herself sitting in a hospital bed after delivering in August 2020.

Looking tired but content, Perry is asked “What day is it?” in the clip. She then took a bite of her food and said, “It’s the day after I gave birth to Daisy Dove Bloom and it’s the day my 5th record comes out.”

Ahead of posting the throwback clip, Perry marked the anniversary of the album's release on her Instagram Stories. “Happy 4th birthday to my album smile,” she wrote earlier on Thursday, Aug. 29 in capital letters.
