In a new interview on the Apple Music Country showToday's Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen, the Grammy-winning "High Horse" singer recounted her grandma's disapproving reaction to seeing her nude on an alternate cover of her new album Deeper Well. The topic arose as Musgraves, 35, explained the inspiration behind the artwork, a photo of her from the back, laying naked in a field, taken by her sister Kelly. Like in the fetal position, sort of, into the earth," she told the radio program. "And it's just sort of vulnerable and almost like rebirth, I guess." Later, Kacey wanted to take share the work with the rest of their family. "I was showing my parents and my grandparents the photos that my sister had taken. And then the naked one came up, and Nana was like, 'Gasp!' Like she just saw a car wreck, basically," she recalled of her grandmother, Barbara. "And she was like, 'No!' She was like, 'That's not… that’s a cover?' And I was like, 'Yeah, it's one of the covers,'" added the "Butterflies" performer. "And she was like, 'Kacey, you're a singer, not a stripper.' The country star has made it known that her grandmother can have strong reactions to her unexpected moves. On the Golden Hour opening track "Slow Burn," Kacey sings, "Texas is hot / I can be cold / Grandma cried when I pierced my nose." In a 2018 interview with Stereogum, the musician reflected on their tight-knit relationship and revealed her grandmother also isn't a fan of her penchant for using strong language. "She’s such a trip. She came the other day to the listening party and this lady, she was like my booking agent when I was like 12," recalled Kacey. "She was like at the ready to give anyone a CD and try to get everyone to book me for their event, but weirdly, it worked most of the time. But she is just funny." At the time, she continued, "After all these years, I’m almost 30 years old, and she still has such a giant issue that I cuss a lot. And I’m like, 'This is not a new fact, like you’ve known this for many years now,' and she just shudders every time I say anything, she’s just like, 'Kacey.'" Close
