Jason Momoa Says Future of Aquaman Franchise 'Is Not Looking Good' Unless 'People Love' Sequel

Jason Momoa is hoping the love for Aquaman doesn't drown out.

"I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time," the actor said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight ahead of the DC film's forthcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which sees him reprise his titular superhero role five years after the original film.

"If the audience loves it, then there's a possibility," he also said of future installments. "But right now, I’m like, 'It's not looking too good.' "

As ET noted, James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios last year. And as Momoa told the outlet, "If there's a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it."

"This is my home. Warner and DC is definitely my home," he added.

Momoa also told ET that he "kind of see(s) where" he'd want the Aquaman character "to go," adding, "And even in the next 10 years or so, like there's a lot of cool things they can do."

"And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it," noted the Game of Thrones alum.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom follows Momoa's Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, as Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns for another attempt at taking revenge on Atlantis. Patrick Wilson returns as Aquaman's half-brother, who teams up with him in order to stop Black Manta.

A synopsis for the new film says Black Manta "unleashes an ancient and malevolent force" by taking a mythical trident as a weapon in the sequel.

"To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance," it adds. "Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family and the world from irreversible destruction.”

In a recent interview with E! News, Momoa opened up about how fans will get to see a new side of Arthur Curry in the upcoming film, as the character is now a husband and a father.

"It's all things I never got to play in the last four films that I've done," the actor said. "I'm like, 'People need to see this side of him.' "

"So that was my request, and I think people are going to really love it," Momoa added.

With James Wan returning as director and a screenplay from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the film also includes Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Amber Heard as Aquaman's wife Mera and more.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is in theaters Friday.
