Halsey Unleashes Blistering New Rock Song 'Lonely Is the Muse' Ahead of Upcoming Fifth Album

The darker track follows their recent single, "Lucky," which interpolates Britney Spears' song of the same name

Halsey is rocking on.

On Thursday, Aug. 15, the "You Should Be Sad" singer, who uses she/they pronouns, shared their blistering single, "Lonely Is the Muse," ahead of their fifth studio album.

The dark rock track pays homage to Halsey's grittier work with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross on her last album — If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power — as well as her 2019 team-up with Bring Me the Horizon on “¿” and her 2020 single, "Experiment on Me."

"Lonely Is the Muse" is the latest in a string of singles the MaXXXine star has shared, proving she is not sticking to one genre. In June, Halsey, 29, shared the Alex G-produced indie-folk single, "The End," and last month, they shared the Britney Spears-interpolated number "Lucky," alongside a music video directed by Gia Coppola.

Last month, the singer/songwriter opened up about their trepidation with returning to the spotlight.

In a Tumblr post, Halsey shared her feelings about fans who've been negative about her recent return to music and have made her "regret coming back."

"My own fans are hands down meaner to me than any other people on the planet. Not speaking for all of you, of course," wrote the Grammy-nominated artist. "But it used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opinion of how much they hate me or how awful I am."

They added that it's difficult "to want to engage in a space that is completely devoid of any kindness, sympathy, patience; or to be honest human decency. Especially after years of hiding from the interactions for fear that this EXACT thing would happen."

"I don’t know man. I almost lost my life," Halsey said, referring to how she was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.

The "Strangers" performer added that they aren't "gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore."

"When I got sick all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what *this* is anymore and I want to crawl in a hole and I regret coming back," Halsey wrote.

The "Gasoline" hitmaker has not yet revealed a release date for her fifth studio album.
