'Jeepers Creepers' Scares Up Sales

The frightening (and, according to critics, frightful) “Jeepers Creepers” creeped up to the top of the box-office list this holiday weekend, according to studio estimates. In fact, it set a record debut for a film opening over Labor Day weekend, besting the previous debut record of $9.8 million for “The Crow: City of Angels” in 1996. The other top spots on the list were for two holdover sequels, parts 2 of “Rush Hour” and “American Pie.” “O,” an update of Shakespeare’s “Othello” that was the weekend’s other new film, had a barely okay debut. That one stars Mekhi Phifer, Josh Hartnett and Julia Stiles. The long weekend Top 10:

1. “Jeepers Creepers,” $15.8 million.
2. “Rush Hour 2,” $11.8 million.
3. “American Pie 2,” $11.7 million.
4. “The Others,” $10 million.
5. “Rat Race,” $9.2 million.
6. “The Princess Diaries,” $7.6 million.
7. “O,” $6.9 million.
8. “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” $6.4 million.
9. “Summer Catch,” $5 million.
10. “Capt. Corelli’s Mandolin,” $4.1 million
