In fact, it set a record debut for a film opening over Labor Day weekend, besting the previous debut record of $9.8 million for “The Crow: City of Angels” in 1996. The other top spots on the list were for two holdover sequels, parts 2 of “Rush Hour” and “American Pie.” “O,” an update of Shakespeare’s “Othello” that was the weekend’s other new film, had a barely okay debut.
