People Editorial Guidelines Published on July 18, 2024 10:12AM EDT Michael Keaton's problematic poltergeist is proving himself a family man — for better or worse — in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. More about the plot of Tim Burton's upcoming long-awaited sequel is unveiled in the newly released full trailer that dropped Thursday, July 18, which includes Winona Ryder's Lydia hesitantly chanting the famous "Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!" line to summon him before admitting she needs his help to rescue her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega). "How do I know you're gonna keep your word?" Lydia asks Beetlejuice, still clearly mistrusting after more than three decades. "I swear on my dead mother's soul," he tells her dramatically — while on fire. The rest of the trailer gives glimpses at both new and callback moments, including a tease of a dance sequence between Astrid and Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara), plus more about Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux's characters. Pictures/YouTube Beetlejuice Immersive Experience Will Invite Fans Into Tim Burton’s Ghoulish World Ahead of Sequel (Exclusive) The trailer ends with a wedding scene much like how the first film features a wedding near the conclusion — but this time, with a more modern twist. "Thank you all for coming to this special occasion, but right now, I'd like a little privacy," Beetlejuice tells the people gathered on the pews inside the church, who are all recording on their phones before their faces start to warp out of shape. Per a synopsis, “an unexpected family tragedy” brings “three generations of the Deetz family” back to Winter River, Connecticut, where Beetlejuice was last awakened. It’s Lydia who “discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened." "With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem," the synopsis adds. "She’s weird, but in a different way and not in the way you’d assume,” Ortega, 21, told Vanity Fair of her character in February. “I wouldn’t say she’s bright and sunny at all." Returning star O'Hara, 70, told PEOPLE the previous month that "it was just so crazy and thrilling, really, to just be face-to-face with Beetlejuice" again, 35 years after the first movie. “Beetlejuice has aged very well.” she joked.
