Dua is the eldest child of Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa. Dua’s mother Anesa is Bosnian and works in tourism, while her father Dukagjin is Albanian and used to sing in a rock band called Oda. Anesa and Dukagjin welcomed first child Dua on Aug. 22, 1995. She became an older sister six years later when her sister Rina was born on May 14, 2001. Her first and only brother, Gjin, was born a few years later on Dec. 30, 2005. Like her superstar sister, Rina is no stranger to the spotlight, as she competitively danced throughout her childhood. She’s accumulated nearly 875,000 followers on Instagram, where she can be found posting advertisements and modeling for brands like Miu Miu and Versace. At the age of 18, Dua’s brother Gjin also boasts an impressive social media following. In October 2023, he started producing music, carrying on the musical legacy of his sister and father. Anesa and Dukagjin sought refuge in London, where Dua was born in 1995. By the time Dua was 11, her father was offered a job that would move their family to Pristina, the Kosovan capital. “I was excited,” Dua recalled to The Guardian of the news. “We always spoke Albanian at home. I had my cousins in Kosovo that I’d never met.” However, the “Physical” singer quickly realized she wanted to move back to London to foster her growing talent for musical theater. She said she felt the pressure of separating her family to pursue her passion. “I didn’t want to let them down – partly because I didn’t want them to move to London to look after me,” she continued. “My little sister and brother [Rina and Gjin] were just settling in school in Pristina. When receiving her awards at the O2 Arena in London, Dua invited Rina and Gjin onstage in a sweet moment. “I didn’t even know what I was gonna say onstage and I was like, ‘Come with me! You two — with me,” she told Off Set. “They were so terrified. When we got offstage, my little brother and sister were like, ‘Why did you do that to us?’ ” “They were like, ‘We love you, but that’s crazy. Don’t do that one again,’ ” she continued. From there, she’s gone on to work with brands like Miu Miu and Versace, and she’s starred in a few short films, including Flynn Matthews' Midpoint. Ultimately, her dancing career led her to find her “preferred” passion of acting. “[Dancing is] where I found out about acting,” she told Numéro Netherlands. “I realized I preferred it more than dancing.” In 2022, Rina opened up to Nylon about the audition process, saying, “You can leave feeling like you had a connection if you walk in and you're a bit bubbly and happy to be there. Rina confessed to Numéro Netherlands that he favorite memory with her sister was her first trip to New York City. “It was my first time in New York and it was really fun,” she said. “Things that I had to do were like bucket list things when you first go. ... The whole trip was just so much fun, it’s definitely one of my favorites.” Close
