1000-Lb. Sisters’ Amy Slaton Learned She’s 'Got More Potential' After Divorce: 'Feeling Confident' (Exclusive)

“Since the divorce, I've been trying to find who Amy is, but I'm actually finding out more," the 37-year-old says

Amy Slaton is finally seeing her own potential.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive clip from Tuesday’s episode of 1000-Lb. Sisters, the 37-year-old is attending a cooking class with her sister Amanda, learning how to cook a steak together. The pair are both searing their steaks at the same work station when Amanda notices that her sister isn’t following the chef’s instructions very well.

“It looks great, it smells great, but smells and looks can be deceiving,” Amanda says with a laugh.

After finishing, Amy tastes her steak and is pleased with her work. “Oh my damn,” she says proudly before asking the chef to try it herself.

“The steak is a little on the tart side and a little heavy on the salt, but I think that it's somewhat palatable,” Ashley, the cooking instructor, says in confessional.

Amy boasts that her grandmother “would have been proud of this meal.” Meanwhile, Amanda tells her that their grandmother would be proud simply because she’s trying.

“After this cooking class, I'm feeling more confident just showing the teacher that you don't have to use the normal s— to make it delicious,” Amy says in confessional.

“Since the divorce and everything, I've been trying to find who Amy is, but I'm actually finding out more in a way," she says, referring to her divorce from her husband of six years, Michael Halterman. "I've got more potential now. I didn't think I could cook, you know, I didn't think I could have that skill set. But now it's like, wait, I can do that.”

In a previous episode of the TLC reality show, Amy received negative feedback when cooking shrimp Alfredo for her family because she added her “secret ingredient,” white chocolate chips, in the pasta, in addition to a number of unusual ingredients.

“I never follow a recipe. I can't explain it. It's just like my grandma cooks through me and just grabs stuff and just adds it,” she explained at the time, while her sister Tammy Slaton said, “Amy's known for making weird concoctions of food…I'm truly freaking scared.”

A new episode of 1000-Lb. Sisters airs Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 9PM ET/PT.
