Demi Lovato’s new haircut is helping her heal.
After a tumultuous few years — which included a near-fatal drug overdose, recovery, engagement and subsequent breakup — the “Anyone” singer, 28, told Ellen DeGeneres that she let go of the past by shaving her head.
“I cut my hair off in November and I am just, I feel so free. I feel more authentic to who I am and I also feel like I used to hide behind my hair,” Lovato told DeGeneres on her talk show Monday.
“I’ve talked a lot about my past, being in recovery from an eating disorder, and I used to use my hair to hide behind — it would cover my body.”
Continued the pop star, “When I started doing all this work on myself I thought ‘What is something that I’ve been holding on to my whole life that I need to let go of?’ I feel more like myself now.”
Lovato’s longtime hairstylist Amber Maynard Bolt told Page Six Style at the time that the look “was a direct reflection of who [Demi] is and how she feels.”
She also said, “There is something about changing your hair so drastically that allows you to own yourself in a way you never thought!”
In January, the singer marked the new year by dyeing her honey blond pixie a light pink hue; she’s now rocking an even more vibrant shade.
Lovato plans to share never-before-heard details about her life in recovery in her forthcoming YouTube docuseries, “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” out March 23.
