Celebrities are outraged over Alabama’s near-total abortion ban, which the state’s governor signed into law on Wednesday.
Lady Gaga led the chorus of furious stars, sending her prayers to all the women and young girls in the state “who will suffer at the hands of this system.”
“It is an outrage to ban abortion in Alabama period, and all the more heinous that it excludes those [who] have been raped or are experiencing incest non-consensual or not,” the pop star tweeted.
Gaga also pointed out that under the new law, doctors who perform an abortion could be punished by up to 99 years in prison.
“So there’s a higher penalty for doctors who perform these operations than for most rapists? This is a travesty…,” she wrote.
Actress Molly Ringwald expressed her anger in fewer words, posting a GIF of Claire Standish, her character in 1985’s “The Breakfast Club” giving the finger.
“Captain America” star Chris Evans ripped the legislation as “absolutely unbelievable.”
“If you’re not worried about Roe v. Wade, you’re not paying attention. This is why voting matters!!” he tweeted, referencing how sponsors of the bill have said their intent is to challenge the 1973 law at the US Supreme Court.
Director Ava DuVernay called on people to “speak up” about the law.
“Don’t shake your head at Alabama and then keep going about your day,” she tweeted. “Realize that this is a warning. It’s Alabama and abortion today. It’s you and your rights tomorrow.
“Your silence will not save you.”
