UniSuper outage was an unprecedented event happened in Google Cloud per the joint statement. Even a recovery site was in place, both prod and DR were accidentally deleted. Luckily UniSuper has backup data in a separate cloud provider for a DR (and rebuild) purpose. It gives an important note about the “offsite backup”. In the on premise world, we do separate DR site with an alternate location (or event vendor), and do data backup with a separate storage medium (aka Tape) as the last resort of backup. When we moved to cloud, we have to think about the necessity to store data into a separate environment (even more it is a separate cloud provider), or even multi cloud providers to maintain the resiliency and avoid possibility of single point of failure. Yes #cybersecurity is important, but we should also think the fundamentals of #resiliency , #disasterrecovery . There’s no absolute answer on the context above, it really depends on the business criticality , technology adoption , and after all the cost effectiveness.

There has been a lot of hype around the Rust programming language. Most articles and blogs I read are heavy on promises, and a little light on testing. I’ve done a simple comparison between a lambda written in Python vs the same lambda written in Rust. Both use the official AWS SDKs. Boto3 is well established but the Rust SDK is new. The official release was about 8 months ago at reinvent. I’ve load tested both using K6. Why? Well, because I want to see for myself if I really do get the 8x improvement in performance and equivalent reduction in cost that people promote. What were the results? We had an incredible session exploring various ways to capture telemetry within Power Apps, both in Canvas and Model-Driven Apps. Nicolò Ferranti delved into Low-Code methods as well as High-Code plugins in C#, demonstrating how to load assemblies into #dataverse to capture events and also a PCF (PowerApps Component Framework) control in ReactJs with monitoring embedded. Angelo Gulisano showcased Power Automate, highlighting its seamless integration with an Azure Function written in NodeJs for capturing telemetry data. It is with sadness mixed with pride that I am announcing the retirement of my Atlassian Forge course on Udemy (Jira Cloud App Development with Atlassian Forge). As a small business owner, you sometimes have to make difficult decisions, including the withdrawal of one of your favourite products. Whilst the rapid rate of change in Atlassian Forge is not a bad thing per se (innovation is, of course, a good thing), it has made the original concept of the course impossible to maintain going forward. I tried to keep the course up-to-date over the years but recent changes led to two whole sections comprising of 24 modules in total to be completely out-of-date. As I was working through the required updates, it emerged that by the time the first few sections were done, they were already out-of-date again. I feel glad to have had to opportunity to help more than 2,200 individuals get started on their Atlassian Cloud app-development journey, and I am aware of a number of businesses having started with someone taking one of my courses. The feedback over the last three years has been amazing. The Forge course was taken by individuals in hundreds of countries on six continents. Sadly, however, I never achieved my goal of landing a student based in Antartica. 😃 Note that you will continue to be able to subscribe to the course until February 2025 (Udemy for Business terms require six months notice). After that, the course will be delisted. This means that no more new students will be able to enrol but all existing students will retain access to the course. However, whilst you can still enrol, please be warned that the examples shown in the course will no longer match what you see when you try to follow along with the course modules.

We’re big believers in the “spread your bets” mindset, and this recent news about UniSuper and Google Cloud is just the perfect example. Rare occasions are, well, rare, but they can still happen — whether it’s an unprecedented sequence of configuration events or a tornado hitting your only data center. UniSuper was well prepared with a backup and a smart team who pushed for a proper data protection strategy (big kudos here!). And that’s the true lesson learned from this story. Kubernetes clusters can easily span multiple clouds and other environments as part of your own data strategy; you just need a way to manage them consistently. We have a long way to go with adopting AI in its totality, especially with the speed that it's evolving at. Main takeaway for me is; Stop talking about AI, create the guide rails, ethical AI practice and then use it for the quick wins that saves time and removes the burden on humans to automate processes #6DAI

I had an interesting morning read of Daniel Compton's blog post detailing his root-cause theory of UniSuper's week-long outage caused by misconfiguration. In Resourcely's first "Incident Review" blog post, we show that the Google Provider hardcoded the "delay_hours" parameter to 0. Running "terraform apply" would cause their private cloud to be scheduled for deletion *immediately*. Accidental deletions in Terraform are more common than folks think. Having a multi-cloud strategy is critical to protecting your business from unforeseen disasters. Just look at what happened to Unisuper, an investment company managing $80 billion, when Google Cloud accidentally deleted their entire cloud environment, including backups in another region. Fortunately, they had additional backups with another provider. 🌤️ Back in August, we spoke to a Chief EA who said his team failed to get buy-in from senior stakeholders on plans to transition to MACH Architecture. The aim was to modernise its infrastructure but they currently rely heavily on tightly integrated legacy systems for mission-critical operations. The main concerns from exec level were: 🎉 Worry about the complexity and risk of decoupling these systems 🎉 Integration challenges 🎉 Skill gap concerns within the team 🎉 Potential data inconsistencies They did explore contractors as a solution but decided to scrap plans (not sure why though, probably cost at a guess) Since then, x2 of the exec team have left in Q4. So the Chief EA will try again in Q1 with new stakeholders 🤞 #stakeholder #buyin #MACH #technology #business #software
