🌊 Rare Foods Australia Launches Ocean-Aged Wine: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Innovation An Aussie abalone grower, Rare Foods Australia (RFA), is making waves in the wine industry with Ocean Signature wine, aged at the bottom of the ocean off Australia's southwest coast. Produced at depths of 15 to 20 meters for a year, the wine's exposure to pressure and currents yields a complex and mellow flavor, akin to traditional wine cellaring but without the need for electricity. Ocean Signature wine, adorned with barnacles and marine life over time, debuted in November 2023, with 2,300 bottles sold to date primarily as gifts, priced starting at $150 AUD ($96 USD) per bottle. Despite limited supply, RFA refrains from advertising, capitalizing on its unique appeal to collectors and enthusiasts. Augusta, home to RFA, is a quaint town near Australia's southern and western points, drawing tourists for whale watching. Leveraging its expertise in abalone production since 2011, RFA's expansion into ocean-aged wine reflects a strategic use of existing resources, including a team of divers who oversee the unique aging process. Innovation continues as RFA embarks on a trial in May, partnering with a French company to tether wine vats for a secondary round of fermentation on the ocean floor. Research expertise in food waste reduction. Reducing food waste is a huge challenge for food manufacturers, retailers and consumers. Having a clearer indication of the usability of meat will be a huge game changer in the meat industry and beyond. Our own Monash Smart Processing Manager and resident Monash Chemical Engineering expert Dr Joanne Tanner from Monash Engineering and Prof Kellie Tuck from Monash Science have co-developed indicator patches for meat packaging that use color sensing technology to determine meat freshness. Research findings by their team including Debarati Bhadury, (PhD), Humayun Nadeem, Maoqi Lin, and Jennifer Dyson are published in the Oxford University Press journal "Food Quality and Safety". Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island are disappointed the Commerce Commission has declined to clear the merger of our two regional co-ops.      Our proposal to merge is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to meet the challenges of a fast-evolving market, while delivering better value and innovation for our customers.    This merger is about bringing together the back-end support functions of our two regional co-ops to become more efficient and competitive. According to the 2023 Food Frontier State of the Industry report, the Australian plant-based meat industry’s growth over time signals its continued prospects for years to come. Since the 2019 financial year, total retail sales of plant-based meat have grown 41%, foodservice sales have grown 253%, and the volume of plant-based meat produced in Australia has increased by 76%. The production of plant-based meat products (as well as products in the wider plant-based foods sector) requires plant protein ingredients made from crops that, with the exception of soybean, are grown in Australia in high quantities. These crops include wheat, barley, oat and rice, and pulses such as pea, mung bean, chickpea, lupin, faba bean, lentil, and navy bean. There are also evolving opportunities in protein from hemp and canola crops. Currently, most of Australia’s high protein grains and legume crops that could be turned into ingredients for plant-based meat products are instead sold on the global commodity market. As commodities these inputs command lower prices than if they were instead processed domestically, value added and directed into the plant-based food supply chain. The barrier to unlocking this value-add is Australia’s lack of sufficient domestic processing facilities to meet existing domestic and international demand for plant protein ingredients, and the projected demand in years to come. During Food Frontier’s consultation with industry, almost every Australian plant-based meat manufacturer expressed a strong desire to purchase and use more Australian grown plant proteins in their products. The industry estimates that Australia will need at least 10 processing facilities to meet the projected global demand for plant proteins and could support even more facilities with the right settings in place. The ideal location for these facilities would be across Australia’s major grain and pulse growing regions, bringing with them regional development and economic and employment benefits. A lot going on in the dairy world at the moment with BusinessDesk NZ’s Riley Kennedy and Rebecca Stevenson poring over the commercial fall-out. Synlait Milk Limited’s trials and tribulations are only getting tougher as it struggles to keep its suppliers on board - something that was always going to be a hard ask when Fonterra was cleared to reduce the level of wet shares its farmer-shareholders needed to supply the cooperative. The a2 Milk Company isn’t being the most helpful shareholder of the processor given it's mainly interested in the lucrative Chinese registration of Synlait’s Dunsandel factory which processes its Platinum infant formula, but coming into the mix is the sale of six of Aquila Capital’s dairy farms in Southland. The farms produce about 2 million kgMS of A2 milk and have a supply deal with Open Country Dairy Ltd until 2027, although I’m sure a2 will be eyeing them up for Mataura Valley Milk if it can. Higher prices at the GDT auctions haven’t given processors too much optimism yet, with most of them taking a softly-softly approach to their own forecast farmgate payments although Westpac New Zealand’s economists see more upside on the horizon. China trade win as the industry prepares for MPEC ALL previously suspended Australian red meat processors can now trade with China, after four years of sustained work by the Australian Government and the Australian Meat Industry Council. A win for the entire Australian agricultural sector, the lifting of suspensions on the final two remaining processors followed the reinstatement of access for eight processors earlier this year. At the Australian Meat Industry Council, we stand firm in our belief that certain animal rights groups, the "Anti-Ag Agenda," are imposing a fringe ideology on everyday Australians, with little regard for the mental health crisis their actions may cause in rural and regional areas. These groups prioritize their agenda over the well-being of our communities. Despite demanding a seat at the table for consultations on animal welfare standards, these activists do not seek to enhance welfare outcomes. Instead, their primary goal is to permanently shut down animal-based food production. Quick and easy beef wrap recipe incoming You’ll need: 180g beef 1 tbsp Sriracha Green Chilli 1 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tortilla wrap 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated 1/2 red onion 1 tomato 1/2 avocado 1/2 cucumber Handful of lettuce leaves 3, 2, 1 go Start off by prepping the ingredients, chop the onion, tomato, avocado, cucumber and lettuce leaves. Season the beef with salt and pepper (or your favorite spices), move to the grill (or in a hot pan) and cook to your preference. Once cooked, slice the beef into thin strips. Next up, assemble the wrap. Lay out the tortilla wrap and add all of the salad ingredients, layer on the sliced beef and top with Sriracha Green Chili, mayonnaise and the sprinkling of cheese. Roll up the wrap tightly, tucking in the sides as you go. Place the wrapped roll in a pan over medium heat, pressing down slightly to toast it until golden brown and crisp on both sides. Three Australian owned food and beverage businesses are to merge to form a $400 million a year food business with big export plans to be known as SPC Global. Fruit and canned products manufacturer SPC Global Ltd, powdered milk business Nature One Dairy and The Original Juice Co Limited are to merge, eyeing off synergies between the businesses in Australia and Asia.
