Doing a landscape review of the content approach on some digital agency websites and loving the Ira Aotearoa website. A few things stood out in this fairly crowded market: The approach to te reo Māori throughout the website (the mobile nav interaction is great). Beautiful! The animation in the headings, which capture the facts and the essence behind everything Ira do (stories, culture, community, strategy) 👏 👏 👏 to whoever designed the interaction and wrote the copy. Those images 😍 love the way they tell the story of what's important to Ira as well as the awesome mahi they evidently do for their clients. The copy - mīharo! It is so good to see a website clearly show what an agency cares about and values in their people and their work - whilst also sounding like real humans. Check it out if you're looking for some inspiration - or just to enjoy a website experience done beautifully well.

Having spoken to many agency bosses, it is quite clear that agencies are seeing big disruption due to AI in terms of business model risks. Client expectations are increasing, budgets are declining and selling billable hours is getting harder and harder. I would like to start yet another WA group to connect Creative Directors and Agency owners and above in SEA. In a time of an increasing volume cyber-attacks, the Bureau of Meterology an Australian Government website still doesn't support HTTPS. 🔓 Sure most of the weather information is non-sensitive but is this acceptble for a government website in 2024? Hacked websites continue to threaten businesses AND their customers, with varying levels of risk and damage. We were recently contacted by a frustrated business - a very well known, established Sydney business that had their website hacked. There was a major reputational damage risk at play here. That wasn’t the bad part - all visitors were directed to an innocent looking page to upgrade their browser after several seconds - doing so would cause them a lot of issues. Their web developer had spent a day looking into the issue, a whole bunch of time creating and rebuilding stuff, and no solution had been offered at that point. OPMC was engaged to offer a second opinion. We proposed cleaning the site - $300 - and this offer was accepted as the way forward - we’ve been dealing with hacked websites for over 15 years now - so if we can’t sort this out then we might as well close our doors 😅 The primary objective was to locate the main offender, which was a line of code inserting a 3rd party page via iFrame into the website. 52 minutes after we were granted site access, the primary issue was identified and resolved. Thus eliminating the customer risk. These are usually easy problems to solve, and while each case is unique, it’s also important what you do next that determines whether it happens again or the issue still lurks in the shadows. I'm a big fan of what Paul Stovell has created. I was fortunate to be in the audience at Something Tech. for this live podcast with Paul and Rohit Bhargava. Paul offers a no BS discussion on how he has built Octopus Deploy but he also talks about the craft of software development and the mindset of developers (demonstrated in the exert below). Leaning into understanding developers and what motivates them to do great work is something I am big a proponent of. If you want to grow and foster great software creation, including process, authenticity and ultimately shipping your product to market in time and within budget then get to know your developers and what drives and motivates them. Another thing that Paul and I agree on is small/ lean development teams- more developers does not equal better and faster software delivery.
