Pretty worrying I think to see one of our major exporters appear to believe that their core business should be an interchangeable bulk product which is the most quickly and easily replaced by non-animal protein alternatives as they come into mainstream production. And in the short-term, this is also likely to mean a continued focus on quantitative production targets...exactly the mindset that has led to an extractive dairy industry that overstocks farms and writes off the resulting nitrogen pollution as someone else's problem. There is a sustainable pathway for animal agriculture and dairy in AoNZ - but it doesn't look like this.

Thank you to the Agrifood Innovation Institute at The Australian National University for having us at the 'Sharing power – approaches to community engagement for more inclusive outcomes' session on Tuesday. Not even a last-minute flight cancellation could keep Alison from talking with great passion about this topic! Alison shared insights into the power of true coproduction to drive meaningful change. That means embracing wholehearted disruption, sharing power and creating safe enough spaces for transformational exchanges between different groups of changemakers - all with equally valued expertise.  Alison warned against a sole reliance on toolkits and templates to drive practice, and instead called for more emphasis to be put on developing fundamental skills in human connection through building authentic relationships, checking our biases and fostering psychological safety for others. The conversations got us thinking about how culture and context comingle to impact our capacity for meaningful engagement.  💭 How might we be agents of change in our respective institutions?  💭 How can we create cultural shifts that embrace new ways of working (knowing that might be uncomfortable and unfamiliar)?  💭 What ways can you start to share your power with others? Mr Milan Kandel, the PhD student from Program 3A led by A/Prof Sonia Liu at University of Sydney and Poultry Research Foundation, recently completed a trial focusing on effect of increased #dietary #nutrient density with high inclusion of #canola product. Previous studies have shown that high #canola product diets lead to less #feed intake by up to 7% as well as growth rate of birds. This reduction of feed intake has been revealed to be associated with high dietary #fibre in canola product and other #antinutritional factors present in canola products, namely #glucosinolate, #polyphenolic compounds and #tannins. Milan's study aimed at increasing the nutrient density of canola product-based diets to increase nutrient #ingestion and to make up for the lower intake. Results are still being analysed, but preliminary review of data shows that appropriate dietary strategies and adequate #pelleting techniques are critical to achieve optimal use of canola products in broiler diets. Milan would like to extend his acknowledgement to all supporting colleagues, e.g. Robin MELWANI, Jojo Mengzhu Wang, Carria Xie, Shay Sadr and Ruby, other lab members, his supervisor, AgriFutures Australia and industry partners.

Sprout Venture Associate Crispin Dye shares insights from the Venture Taranaki Trust event 'Mooving on Methane'. One of the key speakers opening the event this morning was Margaret Stuart, Director of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at Nestlé Oceania. Nestle has committed to Net Zero by 2050, and a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. Nestle is increasingly focused on reducing Scope 3 emissions, emissions within their value chain that they don't directly control. The key message: there are no silver bullets. Different environments require different solutions. And with 27 countries that Nestle sources ingredients from there needs to be a variety of solutions to on-farm emissions. The October’s edition of Northern Horizons newsletter is out! Northern Horizons is Subtropical Dairy’s newsletter published bi-monthly. It is part of the Northern Australian Dairy Hub, an extension service for dairy farmers and those who work within the Northern dairy industry. Subtropical Dairy partners with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of Queensland (DAF) to provide the latest R&D outcomes and contemporary technical resources. The contributions of the DAF Dairy team to this edition included: Dr Amy Barber (Senior Research Scientist) discussed about the ways to improve starch digestibility of sorghum silages and the research project that the DAF Dairy team is developing at the moment in this space. Joanna Srhoj (Dairy Development Officer) showed a summary of the nutrient composition of 6 different hays produced on the Atherton Tablelands in 2024 and compared the quality to the most common forage sources for dairy cows in the region, Setaria pasture and corn silage. Ross Warren (Senior Extension Officer) highlighted the importance of looking after dry cows and heifers during the coming summer to avoid repeating what happened in the previous hot season. Due to the hot and humid conditions, yield and quality of pastures and crops were compromised, affecting body condition of dry cows and heifers, which impacted milk production and herd fertility this calendar year. Ross presented priceless recommendations to mitigate the negative effects of heat and humidity on dairy herds. Great to share this Research at Griffith at the Australasian Agri-Food Research Network conference last week. Register now to attend the launch of the 2024 "Inside our Food Manufacturers Report" which rates Australia’s largest packaged food and beverage manufacturers on their nutrition policies and practices Lead researcher Prof. Gary Sacks will present the key results from the report, including an overview of food and beverage manufacturers performance, including changes since 2018, and a comparison to current global best practices; recommendations for improvement in areas related to corporate strategy, product formulation, nutrition labelling and promotion practices; and wider recommendations for sector-wide improvements that would see manufacturers better contribute to improving population health. After this, Prof. Kathryn Backholer will provide insights into the future actions required to increase the healthiness of Australian food environments. Drawing on her expertise in food policy and food marketing, her presentation will focus on the potential for using regulatory strategies to create a healthier food supply in Australian and international contexts.
