Thanks D&AD and Dara Lynch for the invitation to this morning's #Sustainability breakfast – it was super insightful. Inspirational talks by Priya Prakash, Alice Date, Lisa Merrick-Lawless, Lucy Usher, Lisa Aoyama and Tom Tapper. Also met some other lovely creatives doing uber cool things. Some key quotes: "It's our job to start the conversation" (Lucy) "The antidote to anxiety is action" (Lucy) "B Corp? Why didn't you get an A?" (Tom, quoting his mum) "You can't manage what you can't measure" (Alice) "The money follows the energy" (Lisa M-L) "How can we promote a nature-focused lifestyle?"(Priya) From the notes I took – some of the advice on integrating sustainability into creative work: – Embed sustainability into every brief – Influence clients towards sustainable practices – Broaden the definition of sustainability (it includes how we treat people) – Collaborate with like-minded creatives – Assess whether clients align with your values – Prioritise initiatives that focus on human and societal well-being – Infiltrate and influence culture with the values of sustainability

Only 24% of Creative Directors are female. 24% That’s…insane? infuriating? sadly not shocking. Throughout my career I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by strong female creative leads. Special shout out to Whitney Mortimer and Carla Anderson who encouraged me to take a leadership path and Caitlin Bray Huntington who’s leadership I enjoy in my career today. BUT I’ve also seen female creatives experience absurd pay disparity… Have men with less experience be promoted over them… Or worse hired in above them… And have experienced first hand, men surpassing my expertise in meetings to defer to another male in the room. Sadly, these instances, whether direct or indirect, affect your confidence. 92% of respondents to the article linked below agree that if they had more self-belief, they would be more successful at work. This leads to a phrase I say to my female peers in the creative space (really any space): “Would a man think twice about that?” Would a man apologies for speaking his mind? For asking for a salary he knows he’s worth? For expressing an opinion? For jumping at the chance to be a part of an exciting project? Probably not. I recently enjoyed a conversation with women I admire, who are also in leadership roles, that challenged the idea of being a “girl boss” - admittedly not something I had thought much about. Through this conversation it became clear to me though, I don’t want to be labeled as a “girl boss” I want to be “a boss” full stop. I want to be treated equally because I’m just as good as my peers, male or female. I want other women in the leadership roles, especially in the creative space, to enjoy the confidence that they are worthy and equal. The best way I can think to do this is to lead by example, constantly advocate for my team - regardless of gender, and speak up about the inequality that women experience in leadership roles, in the creative field, and in the world at large.

Progress work on one of the court cards for the Professor Witney's miracle cures deck of playing cards. Dragon Scales for instant pain relief. I need some relief, after the hour or so sketching, the six hours doing the line work and colour, and I still have the water and sky to lay in! I sometimes wonder if it might not have been quicker had I just used pens and paint. I know that what we do today has to drive sales, well, today. But our inability to track the value of when a little kid sees an Air Jordan ad on TV in 1990, and then grows up and buys only Nike shoes and apparel for the next 35 years and counting, is a damn crime against the real value we bring. I was having a mull about how 2024 is panning out .... 2023 seemed to be the year of the great price slash, this year as brands (and us real humans that own,build and manage them) continue to bravely (i’ve done this for 20 years, probably more 🙈it’s a real lot at the mo) navigate the times, the cost of the basics remain high and prices fluctuate - what we have to turn to is Brand….It’s the wind beneath the price and offer tricks ! … building it in as a firm foundation in communication at the very beginning of your growth is completely dooable and an investment in protecting business against the choppy times as sector or the world changes around you , you matter to your audience, they know why the choose you over the others. The secret, I guess, is that Brand isn’t a luxury item for huge national ‘fancy’ business you can be firm in your brand position AND drive the response, educate your new market in fast growth …so we meet all those growth needs of a challenger, new to market product and be certain that your brand is in there as the base ingredient ready to dial up when you need it… anyone got anygood practical reference reads/watches around this to recommend for busy people at the beginings of business growth ?

Some agencies are really struggling at the moment. If you're a Creative, Copywriter, Art Director, or Designer, starting out, without the wisdom of experience, that knife turns a little. The Creative Industry tends to track the economy. When things are great, it's great. When things aren't, it isn't. So, things 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 improve. Before I make the next post about dfcu Bank, I’d like to acknowledge a few things. Firstly, I think their new brand look and feel is significantly better than the previous one. This video is the evidence. Let’s start with the visuals. The old branding was outdated, period. Anyone familiar with design could tell dfcu Bank was stuck in the past. We had almost forgotten who they were and what made them special as a bank. It wasn’t even showing up on most people’s radar when considering opening an account. So, when the new refresh came, it was surprising. It caught our attention. But we weren’t just asking, “What has dfcu Bank done?” We were asking, “Who is the new dfcu Bank, and how different are they now? What do they have to offer?” It wasn’t just about how new they looked; it was about whether they had truly changed. With this new perspective, no one paying attention to dfcu Bank wants anything to do with the old brand. That’s because the old brand carried everything we associated with them before—and those associations, whether true or not, were not positive. That’s the nature of branding: it’s about the gut feeling people have toward you, whether they’re drawn in or repelled without a second glance. For dfcu Bank, this rebrand made us start paying attention. We were seeing promises in their social media ads. There was a new, slightly more dynamic visual system, bold billboards, and even a new logo - and they changed the name on the logo! It felt like they wanted to be a completely different entity, and that’s the “person” we wanted to get to know. But when I go to meet this “new friend” and I still find the old one lurking around, I feel pushed away. It’s like realizing maybe nothing has really changed after all. My point is this: the new dfcu is miles ahead of the old one. Visually—YES! Copy-wise, Definitely! The new logo? Super solid. The colors? Bolder and stronger. They were doing something right, and we were embracing it. dfcu Bank, you had us for a moment there. Please, don’t lose us! I’m saying this because I genuinely love to see brands thrive, especially when they’re putting in the effort. I don’t want to see them feel like they’re punching the wind. So, this is to say - I appreciate what dfcu is doing, and I’m here for it. I want them to exploit their rebrand to its highest potential fully. No fumbling. Now onto my actual post later on.

Learn how to Get Stuff Done. A very key element of our agency value proposition is to be counted by clients as problem solvers. This a message that the team at FDRY tend to hear repeatedly. In general, people want to get ahead and be seen as positive contributors in an organisation to get recognition and visibility. The thing that matters when it comes to stand out is to reliably get stuff done. “Just learn how to get stuff done. I’ve seen, at every level, people who are very good at describing problems. People who are very sophisticated in explaining why something went wrong or why something can't get fixed. There is really no point in having us more afraid and turned-off by the unappealing sight of these proteins alternative. It’s counter-intuitive to the entire movement. Novelties die. Noble ideas— permanent. Look at the many, many plant-based alternatives in the market. They started off with good intentions. I don’t take beef. It was life-changing. I was curious. Until one too many. Still, it’s wise and advisable to go with the flow of the National mandate and initiatives and see where this leads to. Position ourselves closer to opportunities. Be close to the tree. We may not be the first to catch the fallen apple but we could be the ones that pick up the fruits. Stay relevant. And always stick to the brand principles.
