This proposed large-scale development on the Nullarbor has the potential to have severe ecological consequences for the caves it overlaps and the systems it impacts. In the proposed development footprint are caves that are home to endemic fauna (species only known from a single cave). As we approach the two-year anniversary of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, I’m reminded of significant large-scale battery projects under construction, such as CS Energy’s Greenbank Battery project in Logan. This project will play a crucial role in stabilising renewable assets on our grid. Work is progressing rapidly on-site, and once the battery becomes operational in 2025, it will enhance grid reliability and drive further improvements and efficiencies across the network. This project will feature 108 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, all of which were recently delivered and will work to alleviate pressure on our grid by balancing power supply, smoothing out demand peaks, and facilitating load shifting. The benefits extend beyond enhancing grid stability and reliability. Large-scale batteries stimulate economic activity, reduce energy prices, and create jobs and employment pathways for locals—essential as we transition to a clean energy future and build out our SuperGrid. Equally important is fostering a diverse and dynamic battery sector that supports this transition. Our department is focused on realising the Queensland Battery Industry Strategy 2024–2029. This will outline how the government will work with businesses, industry, and research institutions to achieve a thriving battery industry. I think Ketan Joshi nails it on the absurdity of claiming fossil fuels guarantee future energy security or any other type of security. My entire life has been spent listening to, watching or being impacted by the consequences of instability associated with fossil fuels- from pollution to human rights abuses to price bubbles and collapses, wild swings in investment, leaks, coups and warlords and wars, wild bursts of inflation as one tiny part of the supply chain is at risk. Transporting huge bulk loads of the stuff around the world with all the costs, ecological impacts and risks that brings. Explosions and fires, smogs and poisoned waters, oil slicks and drowned birds , fake science and anti-science. If people call that security then I want no part of it in the future. A clean, safe, secure renewable energy future beckons. I’ll be delighted to wave goodbye to the fossil fuel era…

The NZ Energy Minister Simeon Brown, supports "oil and gas exploration" to prevent power cuts from happening when winter comes ... In a country that already have a 80% renewable energy mix (while the rest of the globe is probably envious of this number), we could be working more on energy efficiency, home insulation, better healthy homes for everyone to solve this energy crisis and improve health and finance for all New Zealanders.

By retaining gas cooktops within the state's Net Zero roadmap, they’ve opened the door for renewable options like biomethane. This strategic move not only offers choice to consumers but also positions biomethane as a viable source of renewable gas, essential for meeting our net zero targets with the right policy support. Why Biomethane? Biomethane is a powerhouse for the circular economy. It converts waste into energy, seamlessly blending sustainability with efficiency. This ensures that we can utilize organic waste generated in Australia to forge a renewable gas future, right here at home. By integrating biomethane into our existing gas infrastructure, we boost the sustainability of our energy supply without sacrificing reliability or safety. Inspiration from Denmark: Denmark is setting the pace, with biomethane making up nearly 40% of their gas system as of 2023. They're aiming for 100% by 2030. Victoria is perfectly positioned to follow these pioneering footsteps! The Power of Choice It’s vital that Victorians retain the ability to choose their energy sources, which is crucial for a balanced and progressive energy policy. From cooking in our kitchens to heating our homes, gas is integral to our daily lives. Restricting these options could not only compromise the infrastructure essential for bioenergy but also place consumers at risk during power outages. A Call to Keep Choices Open We applaud the Victorian Government for their initiative to ensure gas cooktops can continue to be used. However, there is still work to be done. To truly unleash our bioenergy potential and advance Victoria’s decarbonization efforts, maintaining a broad range of consumer choices across all gas utilities such as gas heating and hot water is crucial. 📣The Communique from the Australian Environment Minister's Meeting has been released. 🚮Ministers agreed to release a summary of the "National Roadmap: Harmonising action on problematic and unnecessary plastics", identifying 24 items that jurisdictions have agreed to work together to reduce variations on, without reversing any measures that have been taken. Agreed in principle that future action be coordinated and consistent to the extent possible. 🔋Noted the need for urgent reforms to product stewardship arrangements for batteries to address the escalating risks of battery fires and create a safe, circular economy for batteries. Ministers discussed the findings of a draft Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS), prepared by NSW and Victoria, examining options for these reforms. Recognising the need to act quickly to reduce the risks of battery fires, Ministers discussed progression of aligned state-led reforms for mandatory battery product stewardship, with NSW intending to introduce legislation in 2025. 👉 Our position We need to understand the list of 24 items that are on the list being considered for harmonisation. Cigarette filters should be on this list, as one of the most problematic plastics and certainly unnecessary. NSW will implement legislation for batteries. It's been an incredible 7 months since I joined the Telstra enviro team. The commitment to taking action on climate change is deeply embedded across the organisation and I've met fantastic people working on this as we've been reviewing how we can take more direct action towards #NetZero. Starting from July, we're evolving our climate change targets to increase activity to further reduce our energy use and scope 1+2 business emissions. This will see us: 1. Increase our absolute scope 1+2 emissions reduction target from 50% to 70% by 2030 (from a FY19 baseline), while maintaining our 50% reduction goal for scope 3 emissions over the same period. 2. Move away from using carbon credits to offset residual emissions and instead reinvest these funds to directly reduce our own carbon impact. The Clean Energy Regulator has opened a consultation on the new unit and certificate registry and proposed a possible carbon exchange trading model. Efficient, deep and transparent carbon markets play an important role in supporting Australia to meet its legislated climate targets of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. To support the future expansion of Australia’s vibrant carbon markets as the result of the reformed Safeguard Mechanism and implementation of new schemes such as the Guarantee of Origin Scheme, the Clean Energy Regulator is seeking feedback from carbon market participants on: its needs and priorities for the establishment of new market infrastructure, including a modern registry, that allows market participants multiple pathways to access carbon markets; and the feasibility and views on a proposed Australian Carbon Credit Unit exchange trading model. The Coalition is the only party with a credible plan to get to net zero and our plan aligns with international best practice.   Our plan is for a balanced energy mix including renewables, gas and zero-emissions nuclear energy replacing coal as it retires from the system.   Learning the lessons from overseas, it’s clear that there is no credible pathway to net zero without zero emissions nuclear energy.

Worth reading is you are looking for some reality about the costs of reaching net zero, for us now and for future generations. IMO we need to bear/accept the costs now as we’ve had the ‘benefit’ so that our kids and grandchildren have a better future.
