Welcome to Peanut Butter World, New Zealand's first Solar Powered Peanut Roastery.
About us
Pic’s Peanut Butter was established in 2007 when Pic Picot discovered sugar in his favourite spread. Remembering his Mum and Auntie making it, he roasted some peanuts, popped them in a blender and created his first batch of the tasty stuff. His first factory was his garage and a concrete mixer, adapted to roast the hi-oleic peanuts, perfectly. Jars of the stuff sold in vast amounts at the local Nelson Farmers Market. Pic set up an online store to cater for those who had discovered him at the market and wanted to keep eating the stuff. In his second factory and now stocked in local stores, Pic realised a forklift was required. It was this purchase that made him decide to take the business further. Pic's is now on sale in every supermarket in New Zealand and is the #1 selling and best-loved peanut butter of kiwis, outselling the ordinary stuff by 2:1. It’s all natural, fresh tasting flavor has transformed the New Zealand peanut butter market and has become a premium staple of pantries across the country. Pic’s expertly crafts peanut butter, both crunchy and smooth, made with just hi-oleic Aussie peanuts and occasionally salt, in the salted varieties. No nasties or weird stuff added. It is sold in more than 200 gourmet and specialty stores across Australia and launched into all 762 Cole’s stores in November 2014. It has outlets in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, UK & USA and is shipped to customers all over the world, via the website. Lovingly made in Nelson, New Zealand. Pic’s Peanut Butter also sells an outstanding pure cold-pressed peanut oil made from the same high quality peanuts from Kingaroy, Queensland. Adding to the really good range are all natural, full-flavoured Almond and Cashew Butters, launching in 2015 and Peanut Butter Slugs - sachets of the world's finest smooth peanut butter. The factory is open Monday to Friday offering tours at 10am. Pic couldn't be happier and is often free to chat about his creation.

Last week I returned from a trip to Hong Kong and mainland China, my first time back since 2011. The last times I was there were an advertising trip with DDB in 2011 to Shanghai, and a couple of film industry trips in 2008 to Beijing. This time it was to spread the joys of Pic's Peanut Butter, and with China our third biggest market you could say that the Chinese are already nuts about our fine product. It was a delight to see Pic's Peanut Butter on shelves in Hong Kong and China, where our brand is super premium and one of the top imported peanut butters. And just as great was spending time with our business partners Ebaytown and parent company Modern, who have been with us building the brand for the past nine years. When navigating a market that is so different culturally, and so far away, it's imperative to have a good partner. What was mind blowing was the rate of technological change in China. It's been a tough few years since Covid with a slower recovery than much of the West, although the recent Government stimulus package is likely now to accelerate that recovery. Close to half the cars on the road are EV and most of them Chinese luxury brands. China is developing a new confidence in and patriotism for their own brands, which will change the role in-market for imported brands. New selling channels via live online are fast gathering traction to drive brand building and trial. Our business partners are spending around 18 hours per day live broadcasting for their brands, which first kicked off only three years ago. New Zealand exporters ignore the pace of change at their peril. China is moving into a new era, and they are poised to be very, very successful. Thank you to our team Daniel Wang (MInstD CPA)along with Ebaytown and Modern in China, and our NZTE team Julie Jackson, Katrina Buscke, Daniel Taylor, and Irene Wang in Shanghai. It was fantastic to have Pic Picot, founder of Pic's Peanut Butter, join us to share his inspiring journey at XLabs NZ:Future of Food in his hometown of sunny Nelson. Over lunch with the participating teams, he shared his thoughts about what the future of food might look like in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Pic explained what the future might hold for food production in Aotearoa, emphasising innovation, sustainability, and local resilience. He shared his project with the Ministry for Primary Industry and Northland growers to unlock peanut growing in New Zealand. Teams had the opportunity to ask him questions that led to a deeper understanding of his vision and the challenges he believes may lie ahead of us in the food industry. We also discovered the story behind the famous star as their logo (spoiler alert he created it because it was free to print on the lid!) and that Pic has the most incredible sense of humour! Thank you, Pic, for enriching our event with your expertise and enthusiasm. We loved spending time with you, your incredible team and the delicious gift of your peanut butter. We know that your time spent with us at our XLabs NZ design sprint will continue to inspire us as we strive to innovate and shape the future of food together. Pic Picot Pic's Peanut Butter and The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited for having us!
