The NZGDA was formed in 2001 to support and develop the video games development industry within New Zealand.
About us
The New Zealand Game Developers Association was formed in 2004 to champion, support and grow video game development in New Zealand. It is a not-for-profit incorporated society. Our members include commercial game development studios, individual developers and artists employed in the industry, self-employed freelancers, indie game developers, teams applying gaming expertise to health and education, gamification designers, retro gaming enthusiasts, students, educators and researchers. Anyone in any role in the industry is welcome to join: artists, animators, game designers, programmers, product managers, producers, testers, community managers, customer support and entrepreneurial indies. Our members develop for a range of platforms: smartphones, tablets, websites, PCs/Mac/Linux, virtual reality, consoles, Facebook, alternative-input controllers and even board games. We have over 3000 individual members and over 50 studio members (who employ over 750 people).

I'm delighted to be joining the NZ Game Developers Association as an elected board member in 2025. As a lifelong gamer, I've been following the incredible success stories and rapid growth in local game development companies with a lot of interest (and spent many hours playing Dredge while I was on parental leave last year!). Looking forward to supporting our members to keep making great games in Aotearoa.

"Project Mix" made it to the top 15 most wishlisted "VR Only" games on Steam!! It's crazy to see Project Mix gaining traction in the VR gaming space even at this early stage, on the same list as other highly anticipated VR titles🤯 FYI, we do intend to make a non-VR version in the future so as many people can experience the IP we're building as possible.(we're also working a Meta Quest demo) Can't wait to show off more of what we've been cooking up👨🍳

I had the pleasure of working with Deep Field Games from quite early in their journey and while this fireside chat is still freely available, I'd urge early career indie gamedevs to watch it. Or later career gamedevs if you're still effectively new to running your own business. One- it's super fun as these two gentlemen sit there and have misadventures with their bubble pipes. Secondly- Henry goes a lot into the early decisions Deep Field came to when choosing a product to build, building community, picking events to attend, to choosing a publisher, plus advice on remote studio life. As Henry puts it they don't come from the "Trust Me Bro" school of gamedev. When you look at the strategy the team employed, the creative vision and drive of Geoff (Zag) Keene and the measured approaches from Kate Colvin in production and QA and Crisscrossgal building community, it really does highlight how they set Abiotic Factor up for success in a very practical way.
