About us

Everything we do helps to build better communities across New Zealand. This attitude is shared and understood across Hawkins and our parent company, Downer. In other words, we share the same values and we share the same ethos. We're proud of our desire to build better communities and we think Fred Hawkins, who started the company back in 1947, would be proud of it too. We’re thrilled to announce that Hawkins has been awarded the contract for the highly anticipated Waihi Beach Library project, by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council! Recently, we joined the community to officially kick things off with a heartfelt Karakia, setting the tone for the exciting journey ahead. Construction is set for completion in July 2025, and we’re honoured to bring this long-held vision to life. • More than just a gym – UOA's New Recreation Wellness Centre is here! 🏊🏋️ The wait is over! Hawkins is proud to have delivered The University of Auckland’s brand-new Recreation Wellness Centre, which opened last week at 17 Symonds Street and will have its ceremonial opening in February 2025.  The Rec Centre's official name Hiwa, is the culmination of years of dedication and collaboration, driven by the University's and its students' vision.    It reflects the University’s commitment to providing a space where its 46,000 students, 5,000 staff, and the wider community can come together to stay active, foster wellbeing, and connect. Delivering this project during one of the most challenging periods for the construction industry was no small feat.  Our Hawkins team, alongside the consultant and client teams, tackled the impacts of the Covid pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and complex logistical challenges – including moving massive 40-tonne trusses and cranked precast beams under tight constraints.  Through a strong ethos of partnership, they have created a facility that will support well-being and high-performance sports for years to come. Inside, you’ll find a modern gym with large cardio and weights areas, exercise and combat studios, sports halls with glass floors and LED markings for versatility, squash courts, a bouldering wall, and thoughtfully designed chill spaces.  The facility also features a café, retail spaces, and indoor and outdoor multi-purpose event areas. A huge shoutout to our Hawkins team and our Subcontractors and Suppliers for their hard work and dedication in making this vision a reality. 👏   📍 The rec centre is open now – check it out today! #Hawkins #Projects #UOA #NewRecCentre #BuildingtheFuture

We are thrilled to cap off a successful year with two of our projects honoured at the 2024 New Zealand Architecture Awards. The Pā at The University of Waikato, designed in collaboration with Architectus and #designTRIBE, received the prestigious Ted McCoy Award for Education. The jury stated: “In solving a complex brief to address a dispersed campus layout, The Pā’s project team has brought four large facilities together under one roof and created a new circulation spine to bring order to the campus. The guiding principles of manākitanga and inclusiveness are central to the project’s design ethos, and this is demonstrated in the warmth and generosity of its many gathering spaces. As a backdrop, a heroic structural system of glulam beams pushes the boundaries of this technology to give the project its awesome tectonic strength.” The University of Auckland’s highly acclaimed B201 building was also recognised with an Education Award.   The jury stated: “B201 has sought to elevate the mana of Waipapa Marae and Fale Pasifika, connecting them confidently into the heart of the campus. A highly effective collaboration between Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland and Haumi is evident in the integrated artwork that appears to prioritise dialogue with place in its acknowledgement of whenua, Mana Whenua, marae and fale. B201 has received one of Aotearoa’s highest-ever Green Star ratings and its low-carbon design and adaptive reuse aspire to set new benchmarks for sustainable educational environments.”   Congratulations to our valued clients and project partners! These recognitions are a testament to Jasmax’s continued commitment to delivering ground-breaking educational spaces, designed for the next generation. Hawkins to "Let That Sh*t Go" for a Healthier Future! 💩 Last week, our Hawkins Burnham Site in Christchurch wrapped up the final session of the Gut Foundation’s three-part educational series—and what a way to finish! 🚧👏 This toolbox talk was about spreading awareness about bowel disease and empowering people to take charge of their health. With Movember shining a spotlight on men’s health, it’s the perfect time to talk about a sobering reality: 👉 Every day, 9 Kiwis are diagnosed with bowel disease. 3 won’t survive—and 2 of those are men. This isn't just a stat; it’s a call to action. We’re proud to partner with The Gut Foundation NZ to bring vital education straight to the toolshed, ensuring our team knows the steps to better health. A big shoutout to CEO Alice Fitzgerald who joined us on-site to deliver these life-changing sessions! Let’s keep the convo going—because when it comes to health, we all need to #GiveASh*t 💙💩 #Hawkins #Transport #Infrastructure #Movember #BowelHealth #TradieTalks #GutHealth #MensHealthMatters

🏗️ The moment we’ve been waiting for is here! Hawkins is thrilled to be the main contractor for Auckland Airport's new Domestic Jet Terminal (DJT), and we’re excited to introduce our newest crane to the fleet: the 370 EC-B 12 Fibre! As the first construction business in the Southern Hemisphere to own this cutting-edge crane, it’s now getting set up to be put to work at the Airport. With its extra 20% jib head load capacity, enhanced performance, and improved health and safety features, it's set to make a big impact on the project. Equipped with a hybrid generator system, TB01 is setting the standard as a sustainable crane, aligning well with Auckland Airport’s sustainability goals. 🌍✨ Recently, we celebrated with a surprise crane naming ceremony, honouring Hawkins General Manager Terry Buchan by naming the fibre crane ‘TB01’. With nearly 30 years at Hawkins and a long-standing relationship with Auckland Airport, Terry’s hard work truly deserves this recognition. 🥂 As Hawkins EGM Craig Treloar said, “Naming the crane after Terry was our way of showing our appreciation for the relationships he builds, his unwavering loyalty, and how much he means to everyone at Hawkins.” Hawkins proudly operates several Liebherr Tower Cranes, a testament to our strong relationship with Liebherr and the proven excellence of their equipment. Stay tuned for more updates on TB01! #Hawkins #AucklandAirport #DJT #Sustainability #TerrysCrane #LiebherrCranes
