Tim Carnachan, a 5.5 year PQE Property Lawyer, was living and working in London when Anand Ranchhod, a specialist legal recruiter, reached out to him on LinkedIn to see if he would be interested to chat about the NZ legal market and consider a move back home. As it happened, his circumstances were taking him back to NZ in September and CoLegal worked closely with Tim throughout the process to ensure a smooth transition into a new role back home, staying in touch as he travelled through Europe on his way back. Anand and Tim caught up to discuss Tim’s career goals for his return, his timeframe and his experience. Tim was keen on securing a commercial property role with a varied workload, exposure to quality work and clients and ideally in a medium or larger-sized firm. Given his background in both residential and commercial property law, it was important to find a role that aligned with his experience while offering the professional growth he sought. CoLegal acted as a career advisor updating him on the current state of the New Zealand legal market and salaries, particularly within the property space, refining his CV and providing insights as to how his international experience would be viewed when returning back to NZ. Because CoLegal is actively engaged with employers on the ground, we were able to highlight Tim’s transferable skills, manage the timing of the process, and ensure everything moved smoothly. With two interviews lined up within a week of his arrival, Tim was able to make progress almost immediately. Within a week of interviewing, Tim received an offer from his preferred employer, Martelli McKegg. Tim started his new role a month ago and he has already become a valuable addition to the commercial property team at Martelli McKegg. We wish Tim all the best in his new role and look forward to seeing his continued success in New Zealand’s legal sector.
