Joanna and Dean forever.
Goldie Hawn has a simple secret for why her four-decade relationship with Kurt Russell continues to be a success — “good sex.”
“Because sex is something that connects you and creates more belonging. People who have healthy sexual relationships usually last a lot longer. But it’s not just because of the act, it’s because of the warmth and the intimacy that it creates,” Hawn told E! News at her Love-In Gala in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Goldie Hawn Foundation and MindUP in LA on Sept. 27.
She also quipped: “You have to be nice to each other upon occasion.”
The couple have been together since 1983. They initially met on the 1968 set of “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band,” but it would be years until they officially became romantic.
They starred in 1984’s “Swing Shift” before reuniting onscreen again in the Garry Marshall-directed comedy “Overboard” in 1987.
“You know you’re not the same person,” the “Now and Then” star explained over the weekend. “You don’t think the same way oftentimes. And you have to accept that, but you have to measure are we having fun, or is this something we want to do? Do we have laughs together? Do we share certain things? You don’t have to share everything.”
The “First Wives” star continued, “We have a lot of expectation, I think, around relationships, but you have to like the person. That’s very important.”
Hawn, 78, and Russell, 73, have never married, but are parents of actor son Wyatt Russell, 38. Kurt also welcomed son Boston Russell with ex-wife Season Hubley and Hawn is the mom of actors Oliver and Kate Hudson, whom she had with musician Bill Hudson.
Kurt also spoke about their relationship while they attended the event on Friday.
“Most people that have been together for a long time, I think, share one thing in common,” the “Christmas Chronicles” actor told E! News. “And that is that after that many years together, you will have experienced just about everything there is to experience together and understand all the ups and downs and what it means.”
“I just love the fact that we met and we’re still doing it. We still like being together.”
The couple have been vocal about not tying the knot over the years. But they’ve gushed plenty of times on how they first met.
“I was 21 and he was 16 and I thought he was adorable but he was much too young,” the actress told Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4. “And then years later we met up again and I liked him and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. But we both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”
Their first date ended up being a night of dancing at the Playboy Club in Manhattan — but they decided the “night wasn’t over yet.”
“We eventually found our way upstairs, looking around at imaginary furniture and we were in the imaginary bedroom, now, and we are realistically having sex,” Kurt recalled during an appearance on “Harry” in 2017, “when the police walked in because we had to break into the place to get in.”
“That was our first date,” he went on. “It was a lot of fun, I’ll tell you what. I can’t believe it was a long time ago.”
