It cannot be stated enough - this new Swedish framework for indoor mobile networks is a game-changer in order to secure that we end-users get real 5G where it is needed the most - Indoor. 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 is that a single shared network is needed which all operators can connect to on equal terms, overlapping networks is an ESG disaster and an economical impossibility. 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 is that the shared network needs to be a modern active network in order to actually deliver high performance in both high speeds (Mbps) as well as massive capacity (Mbps per sqm) but also to enable all future possibilities like accurate indoor positioning as well as other cool 5G tech. The property owners behind this model represent a huge part of commercial properties in Sweden and they are willing to invest in 5G, side-by-side with mobile operators, to secure that our society can benefit from future of connectivity everywhere indoor, a must for us to have a chance to reach net-zero goals for sure.

What a phenomenal week the last one turned out to be!    You know how we all try to do our bit for the planet? Like unplugging our chargers or flipping the light switch off as we leave a room? Well, our team has taken those everyday energy-saving habits and scaled them big time. And this led to Ericsson’s eco-friendly innovation being honored with the Green Future Best Practice Award at the Deutsche Telekom Campus Fair 2024! 🌍🏆   The journey that brought us here was a team effort between our MELA SCR team and the local business team on the ground, particularly the Deutsche Telekom Key Account Manager, who all poured their expertise into crafting an award submission that shone a light on our collaborative spirit and innovation. Together, they crunched the numbers and showcased how Deutsche Telekom’s network in Germany is making leaps in capacity and energy performance, all while lowering its carbon footprint with our new energy-efficient radios. We're talking a massive 60.8 GWh energy saved annually, and a reduction of 4,290 tons of CO2e. This is what modernization with a conscience looks like, and it's helping DT sprint towards their ambitious Net Zero goal by 2040.   But this isn't just about celebrating a win. 📱Farewell to 3G: Reflecting on a Telecom Milestone📱 Yesterday, Harri Holma, Nokia Bell Labs Fellow, announced the closure of the last #3G network in #Helsinki. Harri's #WCDMA book, co-authored with Antti Toskala, was essential reading—the “bible” for the #telecom industry on designing and deploying #3G networks. I remember organizing user-group sessions in Helsinki, where my Telefónica’s customers would bring their well-used copies for Harri’s autograph after his presentation. This book, along with the #GSM bible by Mouly and Pautet, has accompanied me across three transatlantic moves—a testament to their lasting impact. #Mobile networks have transformed over the past three decades, but with advancements in #AI and #quantum communications, the next 30 years promise to bring even more revolutionary changes.

Nik Willetts, TM forum CEO opens up DTW 2024 in Copenhagen. - 70% of the population is connected to the Internet. Customers don’t mind whether it’s 4G or 5G; they just want reliable service. We now live in an AI-driven world and must adapt to it. There are three main challenges with AI: creation, protection, and connectivity. - Composable IT ecosystems: Standardize reusable building blocks, components, and canvases. This approach brings products to market faster and delivers new products and services more efficiently. - Autonomous networks: Deliver tailored solutions with resilience and performance using AI-based automation tools. - Generative AI: Today, it is still somewhat disappointing due to difficulties in obtaining clean and efficient data. However, traditional infrastructure is already leveraging the benefits of generative AI, showing a 30% improvement in efficiency. In a recent interview with CNBC's Frank Holland, Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm discussed the significant impact of fragmented and over regulation in Europe on companies like Ericsson, particularly in the context of horizontal technologies such as AI and next-generation connectivity. Ekholm emphasized the need for Ericsson to compete in developing capabilities and solutions not only in telecoms network areas, but also in horizontal economy areas, expressing concerns about the regulatory environment hindering long-term prosperity and innovation. He called for a new approach from Europe's regulators and policy makers, advocating for a unified, innovation-focused strategy to attract investment and create a pan-European market.

If you have not read this paper from 2021 by Caroline Gabriel with Analysys Mason please do. It outlines (predicts) what is NEXT for in-building wireless and is exciting and coming in the next 5 years. To be fair much of the tech will need to be developed to accomplish it but it's all attainable (challenges in the areas of sync, antennas, server capacity, etc.). From Telco to Hellco: I'm the CEO of a large telco. I want to destroy it as fast as I can. Many of the telco industry's fittest and finest have just returned from a week in Copenhagen at TM Forum's flagship event, DTW24. Iain Morris of Light Reading suggests in an article that Copenhagen is an apt location for the event because many industry representatives are "in little mermaid land." The tone of his article is urgent and critical, rightly highlighting the severe challenges faced by the telecom industry. His story conveys a sense of alarm in response to TM Forum re-issuing a "code red" alert once more. It's an alarm that emphasises the need for immediate and transformative action to navigate ongoing challenges / disruptions faced by many telcos globally. The despondence in Iain's article triggered the thinking behind today's blog - an exercise that draws inspiration from Charlie Munger's inversion principle, where one approaches a solution to a problem (preventing the imminent death of telco) by first considering it as the opposite outcome (intentional destruction of a telco). By identifying actions that would destroy a telecommunications company (and industry), perhaps we can better understand what the industry can seek to avoid. Munger, renowned for his wisdom in business and investing alongside great friend Warren Buffett, often used this technique to gain deeper insights and/or ensure robust decision-making prior to investing. It seemed to work for him. Let's see if it works for us too!! So here goes: I'm the CEO of a large telco. I want to destroy the company as fast as I can.
