Yesterday Cay Horstmann visited the Giant Leap office in Oslo, and gave us an exclusive talk followed by a very interesting discussion on virtual threads and structured concurrency - two of the most exciting and relevant topics in Java right now 💫 Some takeaways from our discussion: - Greatly improves throughput when threads mostly block. For CPU-intensive tasks consider alternatives such as parallel streams. - Removes the need for reactive programming. Use the “synchronous” Java style  you know and love! - You can have many more virtual threads than physical threads. Beware of thread-local variables and consider rate-limiting for external bottlenecks. - Java has the advantage of being a late mover. Other languages get shiny new features earlier, but Java often does it better 😉 Thanks again for the visit, Cay! You are truly an inspiration to us in Giant Leap and the rest of the Java world 🚀

🎥 Recordings of our presentation on Copenhagen AWS User Group Meetup in June 2024 In this talk, Krzysztof Słowiński and Pooyan Razian discussed some of the challenges tech companies face in managing different volumes of data for different purposes. Then, for data analytics, we discussed centralized and decentralized approaches and different architectures for building Data Lakes, Data Meshes, etc. After that, we discussed seven selected challenges in building data platforms and how Amazon Web Services (AWS) could help us and enterprise companies like the hypothetical case we chose for our talk. This week, Mikkel Dengsøe shared a post on "Why We Still Have Broken Windows in Data Testing in 2024." While there's no single answer, one key reason is that we need for more strategic testing. Our analysis of some of our customer workspaces also shows that most tests are basic, mechanical checks, like not_null and unique. These tests, while important, are often insufficient to catch deeper, systemic issues.
