Excited to share this news: with a 18.4 million Euro investment in groundbreaking health technology in HTRIC at University of Groningen and UMCG we will be able to accelerate our innovation to achieve (and are committed to do so) #morehealthyyears for people in the north and through valorization worldwide. Very thankful for this investment in the future of health and very proud of the many scientists, clinicians and others involved to make this happen, including Marleen Kamperman, Wouter Nagengast, Pieter van der Zaag, Hélder A. Santos and many others. Research within this programme will include improved prediction of sepsis, innovative cancer therapy activated by light, improved imaging of infections and the development of new smart materials with broad applications. Through these innovations we can improve patient outcomes, by acting faster and more precise through better diagnosis and prediction, and by developing more effective therapies with less side effects. HTRIC is creating a unique ecosystem in the north, with a collaboration between University (Faculty of Science and Engineering - University of Groningen UMCG), companies (LIFE Cooperative) and schools of higher education (Hanze, NHL Stenden). A good post by Robert van Ossenbruggen in JP Castlin's very good Strategy in Praxis newsletter, 'navigating through the metric jungle'. Too much data is as problematic as too little, and the post shares some handy principles to consider, such as: - Starting with the decisions instead of the data (with top down and bottom up approaches) - Giving your data a hierarchy - revenue last quarter is more important than an indicator like 'click through rate' - Test the relevance - don't assume that x will result in y. I am excited to share my new publication on another rare genetic disease, Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), describing a novel disease mechanism involving dopamine (a.k.a. a pleasure hormone in the brain) and suggesting a potential therapeutic target for BBS. As a leading author of this study, I developed a highly efficient innovative strategy to speed gene/drug-target discovery, leveraging resources like the Million Mutation Library, the FDA-approved antipsychotic drug azaperone, and well-established behavioral assays in the Blakely Lab. This strategy allowed us to screen >23,000 mutant alleles (genetic mutations) in a few weeks, indicating a powerful gene discovery tool that can save >70% of the time, effort, and cost associated with regular approaches. Speaker spotlight: Daan Smans will focus on 'Modeling failure detection of Elevator Doors through sensor fusion'.  Over half of the world’s population currently lives in an urban environment. To facilitate the rapid growth of urbanization further boosted by an ever-growing world population, cities need to grow vertically as well. Although steel and concrete make it possible to build ever higher, it is elevators that make such buildings actually usable.    Thus, with elevators forming the core of an ever-increasing number of buildings, their value is largely dependent on their actual performance (i.e., “availability” or “uptime”). Compensating for downtime through adding additional elevator units is not a viable solution. The extended footprint of the elevator shaft(s) reduces the available tenable floorspace, thus decreasing the economic viability of the building. Hence, downtime needs to be mitigated differently. 🌎 B Corp news! Amsterdam’s fast-charging company Fastned has officially been B Corp certified by non-profit organisation B-Lab. 🔋What does the B Corp certification process look like? The certification process to become a B Corp is rigorous yet rewarding – it involves meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. ⚡ But who are Fastned? 🏥 Another milestone for Amsterdam’s life sciences and medical research community – the ADORE project has received €9M from Dutch Research Council (NWO) to investigate cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. 🗓️ This will be a long term project spanning 10 years – and will bring together over 2,000 researchers from Cancer Center Amsterdam and Amsterdam Neuroscience to create personalised treatments plans by investigating common disease mechanisms. 😷 With cancer cases in the Netherlands expected to jump from 800,000 in 2022 to 1.4 million by 2031, and dementia affecting 1 in 5 – the NWO is investing €25 million in total across different research initiatives. 🏙️ This grant solidifies Amsterdam’s position as being a leader when it comes to the healthcare landscape, with this research not only having a positive impact on a national level, but with the potential to change lives internationally. 🔗 Dive into the details about the ADORE grant and what it means for Amsterdam: https://lnkd.in/eaEb7rV8

We are thrilled to announce that Matrix Innovation Centers - office and laboratory space for deep tech entrepreneurs in Amsterdam will open its newest building on the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) Campus in mid-2027, marking a significant milestone for the city’s entrepreneurial and scientific community. Located at the corner of De Boelelaan and Korte Mahlerlaan, this state-of-the-art Innovation Centre will be a hub for start-ups, scale-ups, and external companies specializing in Life Sciences, Medtech, and AI. At Amsterdam Chemistry Network, we are especially proud to see this consolidation, as Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), one of our board members, continues to foster collaboration between universities and industry through cutting-edge facilities like this. Utrecht - the first bidirectional region in the world! What does that actually mean? The City of Utrecht recognized the value of large-scale V2G applications very early on. With the help of many partners, including grid operator Stedin Gemeente Utrecht, Provincie Utrecht, OEMs such as Renault Group and Hyundai Motor Europe, Utrecht has been able to take the lead in preparing for a bidirectional future. Thanks to the installation of hundreds of bidirectional AC charging stations Utrecht is ready for the rollout of V2G.
