Addressing Unseen Challenges in Creating an Inclusive Dutch Job Market In our ongoing efforts to foster #inclusivity within the Dutch job market, we must confront not only visible barriers but also those embedded within our cultural perceptions. A profound exploration by Jack Shaheen in his book Reel Bad Arabs sheds light on this issue by analyzing how over 1000 Hollywood films have portrayed Middle Easterners, predominantly casting them in negative roles as villains, terrorists or at least backwords. This portrayal has significant implications. #Recruiters and HR professionals are part of a society that has been exposed to these stereotypes for decades, possibly influencing their perceptions and decisions without their conscious awareness. This type of media influence contributes to an inherited #bias against Middle Easterners and Arab #immigrants —a subtle yet powerful force that can unintentionally shape western recruitment practices and workplace dynamics. Despite robust efforts to promote diversity and equality, the question remains: Can these initiatives effectively counteract decades of systematic and intense stereotyping? The challenge is considerable, but not insurmountable. Acknowledging the source and impact of these biases is the a step towards genuine #change. By actively seeking to understand and dismantle these preconceptions, we can enhance our efforts to build truly inclusive workplaces. Let's continue to champion diversity not just in policy, but in practice, by creating a dialoge and practices that rectify such deformed stereotyping, and by educating ourselves and challenging the bias that persist in media representations. 'Mindfulness For Brain Health' - Naked Leader Week Yes indeed, after 1,076 NL Weeks over the last 21 years, I am actually recommending a book! https://lnkd.in/e37-ajD4 OK In a very crowded market, a book has emerged that looks at mindfulness from a hugely different perspective – brain health. Full of simple techniques, each of which are linked to the wellbeing of this rather important organ, and based on real life science. From hundreds, here are seven remarkably simple ones I found very helpful: • Make a list of the top three people who bring you happiness and send them a message to tell them how thankful you are to have them in your life. • Observe your thoughts each day. Imagine you're an outsider observing your thinking brain. • Acknowledge that your feelings are powerful and that you're allowed to feel them. • Next time you need a release, simply ask yourself, "What do I need most right now?" • If you work from home, create a ‘transition’ task to signify to your mind and body that the workday has ended. This could be going for a walk, making a tea, putting on some favorite music – anything that encourages that switch-off. • Use your senses to experience the look, smell, sound, feel, and taste of each food you try. • Practice Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). Slowly focus on tightening one muscle for 8-10 seconds, then relax it. This helps relieve tension all over the body even if you aren't experiencing muscle pain (Toussaint et al., 2021). As I checked out, I casually mentioned how cold the store felt. The saleslady’s response took me by surprise. She said: “You’d think the architect would have considered sustainability when designing this building. I didn't study much but would’ve added automatic doors to keep the heat in and save energy.” It struck me how easily we can overlook small yet impactful design decisions. 3 Personal Branding Lessons from Jan van Schuppen My family has some truly remarkable characters. Here we are, celebrating my uncle Jan H. van Schuppen's birthday. In my father’s family, it has been a tradition for generations to name the firstborn son “Jan.” Now, guess who among us has built the strongest personal brand? Over recent months, I’ve been in stealth mode, getting ready to launch new businesses. As I know how essential personal branding is for startups, I decided to take a hard look at my own online profile. While I’ve been on social media for years, working in content marketing and maintaining a solid presence, I realized that my profile always comes second to “the other Jan van Schuppen.” My uncle is 77. He’s not on social media, he’s not in the news like my famous doctor brother, Hans van Schuppen, and he definitely doesn’t have a content strategy. Yet, he’s built a very strong online reputation. Here are three personal branding lessons I learned from Jan van Schuppen. Lesson 1: Be exceptional My uncle is a University of California, Berkeley PhD and a world-renowned mathematician specializing in Control Theory. He’s the Editor-in-Chief of Mathematics of Control, Signals and Systems. Growing up we heard stories of “Uncle Jan from Amsterdam,” as we fondly branded him, and his travels to far-off places. During lunch he casually mentioned that AI doesn’t impress him because it’s “simply applying our old calculations.” Here I was, feeling as smart as a fifth grader, trying to keep up! Being exceptional isn’t about fame, followers or subscribers. It's about finding your niche where you stand among the best, which is crucial for an authentic personal brand. Lesson 2: Think in Terms of Decades, Not Months  Over the years my uncle has published hundreds of papers, mentored students, and built a legacy that’s lasting. He didn’t set out to create a “brand”—he focused on doing solid work. That long-term commitment is what made his reputation. Personal branding is a marathon, not a sprint. Lesson 3: Build Quality Connections His online presence is backed by thousands of links from trusted universities, publications, and research sites. No viral Instagram post can match the lasting impact of a strong link network. Focus on building a legacy based on substance— It’s the quality of your connections, not the quantity, that makes your brand last. My uncle’s legacy has been an eye-opener as I grow my own personal brand. In a digital world obsessed with visibility, his powerful influence reminds me that lasting impact is built from the inside out. So the challenge I’ve set for myself: build a brand as strong as Jan van Schuppen’s. How much work does your online profile need?

A recent billboard campaign (in The Netherlands) encouraged people to give up their job and use their talents to create more positive impact on the world. For some the right choice. I am all for the ‘rocking chair’ question: "When you’re 80-something reflecting on your life, do you feel passionate about the impact of your time at work?" If you feel that you're not on the right path, switching may be an important step to take.   ‘Giving up your job’ is however not the right answer for many. And importantly, the biggest issues we face as humanity are only going to be resolved when people adopt the right solutions as part of their companies and organisations.   One of the things that has become crystal clear to me in the 20 years since I took the plunge from the tech sector to ‘making a difference’ is that our future lies for a big part in the hands of people in business. Far more so than most realise. Think of less instead of more floods, storms, wildfires, droughts, biodiversity, coral reefs, poverty, exclusion, inequality, social unrest, polarisation, extremism, crime, pollution, illnesses such as cancer (and even changes to our DNA), happiness, trust, and wellbeing. While the links are not always that obvious, all companies impact on these global issues.   Whether you are a business leader, or an employee, you can help to change the course of the future by adopting effective solutions as part of your business. Even if a small group of you and your colleagues drive the right types of changes it will help to nudge the solutions from ‘early adopters’ to an ‘early majority’ and then hit the mainstream. You would play a powerful part in steering away from the mess where we are currently heading to a more flourishing planet instead. And as the (still rare) best practise cases show, doing this the right way turns out to be good for business too.   As beautifully said by Margaret Mead: ‘Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world. In this video, Annemarie talks about how our sensory thresholds contribute to our choices and behaviours. Sensory avoiders (people with low sensory thresholds) tend to avoid the multisensory stimulation that malls provide. In this case, online shopping is preferred. On the other hand, sensory seekers (those with high sensory thresholds) usually prefer high sensory input such as a busy shopping mall. How saying 'yes' to taking the unbeaten path shaped my approach to innovation. Thinking and behaving like an entrepreneur as an employee, I've often found myself at crossroads. I usually chose "the road less traveled", since outside of my comfort zone is where I learn the most and am able to gradually increase my impact. My journey has been filled with lessons from both my successes and setbacks: ✅ Driving business model innovation on the board of our tech SME. ✅ Contributing to start and scale international businesses at Nestlé. ✅ Incubating digital innovation and catalyzing intrapreneurship at Migros. ✅ Helping teams of intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs build and launch their ventures. Each experience was a building block in my understanding and practice of impactful innovation and entrepreneurship. Some of my most important lessons: ✅ Top leadership's trust, involvement and support is not just beneficial, it's essential. ✅ Aligning with the organization's strategic goals ensures your efforts amplify them. ✅ Eco-system, instead of ego-system: bridging gaps in communication and value-based collaboration and co-creation turn challenges into opportunities. ✅ Pursue an ambitious purpose, vision and mission. And be strategic about the steps you take. Start small, learn, iterate and adjust as you go. These insights have also led to the creation and helped shape SwissLEAP , where we empower pioneers to innovate with impact. The Lean Startup approach, data-informed decision-making, and bridging gaps to reduce friction at intersections, have become our tools of choice to foster organizational cultures and practices of learning, collaboration and innovation. Insight of the week Team Academy Amsterdam Sharing insights I make during my entrepreneurship study. Year 3 started this week and traditionally kicks off with Startup Week. A week organized by students with the purpose of integrating year 1 and introducing them to the concept of the studies, sharing experiences and bonding. Each year has to organize one day - topics can be chosen freely. Concepts are presented upfront. Even though most students at TA have their own business, the study is based on a team learning concept. #ifyouwanttogofastgoaloneifyouwanttogofargotogehter The foundation of each team is a "team manifesto" - a document that manifests shared values and goals for each team. From our experience setting this up is hard to grasp in the beginning and even harder to execute. That´s why we wanted to introduce year 1 to the concept early - but in a fun and playful way. How? - teamed up 1st years with representatives from each year - 4h time to explain / experience the concept and share experiences - 1h time to edit a video - presentation - most creative team wins Please have a look at my favorite video from this day. That feeling when it all comes together... Lately, I have been enjoying reading physical books again. It helped that the book was very well written (thank you karin de galan school voor training) and that the content acknowledged everything I apply intuitively. Always nice to find out that there is scientific proof behind what you do 😉 (For those interested, it's a book in Dutch: GOED voor de GROEP) Since then I am drawn to so many books, and with that unfortunately also came back the stress of not having the time to read. So I decided to try out the smartreading method to read a book in one hour and today I am a happy reader 📚 But what I love the most about the smartreading method is that it is in line with how I proceed at work when creating a course or workshop. So often, I see that the goal people set is not well defined and thus the road to success is long and hard. But with a smart goal it becomes so obvious what needs to be done. Then it's just a question of choosing the right framework and fill it with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to perform the steps towards the goal. And here is the secret: Smartreading follows the same process 🤩 🎯You VISUALISE your goal. What do you want to be able to do after reading the book, make it a smart goal ~ First thing to do when creating a course or workshop is to determine the learning goal. ⏩Then COLLECT the general ideas with turboreading speed and create a mindmap to structure them ~ Second step is to create your course plan outline by determining which topics and activities you can use. Only the building blocks, no content yet. 🦘You EXPAND your mindmap by jump reading to only those parts in the book that holds the info needed to achieve your goal ~ Third step is to expand your plan and look up the content you'll need for just those activities that will allow them to reach the learning goal you have set. Scrap the rest, no need creating material for that. 🧠You REINFORCE the info in your memory by regularly revisiting the mindmap ~ When it's time to present your course, go back to the plan you created and revisit the information you put in there to rock and roll 👩‍🎓 I'd like to thank Paul van der Velde and Peter Plusquin for writing their book. I gave a very simplified picture of their method here, that doesn't do it justice. My only purpose was to show you my insight on the link with course creation. If you'd like to know the full secret to reading a book in one hour, please read their book, I can highly recommend it. You throw a pair into the washer/dryer, but somehow, they come out as singles. 🧦🤯 (𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺, 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘯, 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥𝘐𝘯, 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦…) Yesterday morning, I decided to apply a common business strategy to finally take care of a household nuisance: the sock bag. Instead of throwing all the socks onto the bed and trying to find matches (as I tend to do), I created categories for each family member: dad, daughter, son, and me. As I sorted, I placed each sock in its respective category. It may sound like a simple solution and maybe I should have thought of it earlier, but remember, it’s all about celebrating the small wins, right? 😊 It’s amazing how much more efficient and less stressful this method was. Breaking down the larger problem into smaller, more manageable segments and doing so early on in the process – before the chaos, the overwhelm, and throwing my hands up in resignation. That sock bag took on new meaning for me when I realized that sometimes in business I…you…we…target everyone and everything at once. We go all in. We try to meet the needs of every possible person we think could use our services. We throw a mess of socks on the bed and spend all of our time and energy attempting to find the best matches for us, our families, and our businesses without a strategy. As mompreneurs, we know how important it is to be efficient. Breaking down big challenges into small, manageable segments leads to getting the job done with far less stress.
