That feeling when it all comes together... Lately, I have been enjoying reading physical books again. It helped that the book was very well written (thank you karin de galan school voor training) and that the content acknowledged everything I apply intuitively. Always nice to find out that there is scientific proof behind what you do 😉 (For those interested, it's a book in Dutch: GOED voor de GROEP) Since then I am drawn to so many books, and with that unfortunately also came back the stress of not having the time to read. So I decided to try out the smartreading method to read a book in one hour and today I am a happy reader 📚 But what I love the most about the smartreading method is that it is in line with how I proceed at work when creating a course or workshop. So often, I see that the goal people set is not well defined and thus the road to success is long and hard. But with a smart goal it becomes so obvious what needs to be done. Then it's just a question of choosing the right framework and fill it with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to perform the steps towards the goal. And here is the secret: Smartreading follows the same process 🤩 🎯You VISUALISE your goal. What do you want to be able to do after reading the book, make it a smart goal ~ First thing to do when creating a course or workshop is to determine the learning goal. ⏩Then COLLECT the general ideas with turboreading speed and create a mindmap to structure them ~ Second step is to create your course plan outline by determining which topics and activities you can use. Only the building blocks, no content yet. 🦘You EXPAND your mindmap by jump reading to only those parts in the book that holds the info needed to achieve your goal ~ Third step is to expand your plan and look up the content you'll need for just those activities that will allow them to reach the learning goal you have set. Scrap the rest, no need creating material for that. 🧠You REINFORCE the info in your memory by regularly revisiting the mindmap ~ When it's time to present your course, go back to the plan you created and revisit the information you put in there to rock and roll 👩‍🎓 I'd like to thank Paul van der Velde and Peter Plusquin for writing their book. I gave a very simplified picture of their method here, that doesn't do it justice. My only purpose was to show you my insight on the link with course creation. Some time ago we spoke with an acquaintance of mine. We were laughing about how we choose apples. “Oh, no, we will not buy Dutch apples”, “Oh, sure, we will buy Dutch apples”. IN one sentence they were “foreign” (meaning worse), in the second they were “local” (meaning better). Even though the apples were exactly the same. Do you buy your local appleas only because of their “nationality”?   The results of this study show that products represented in the marketing communications as local (or they are separated by a smaller physical distance) are preferred.   But if they are sold by a local gardener with whom you are familiar personally (or they are separated by smaller social distance), then likelihood of purchase increases even further!   Without too much consideration, this is a very visible fact, with the farmer markets, farm-to-table schemes. And when I remember the lady that sells us our vegetables for the -teenth year, I stop looking for further evidence. Of COURSE we will prefer buying from her. I bet it sounds right to Dutch people (and not-Dutch who have been communicating with Dutch people for some time😉). What does that mean? As well as US and Germany. In those countries people say what they mean, mean what they say and actually believe that when conversation partners do not do the same, they are lying. Dutch, Americans and Germans state their messages explicitly and several times to ensure those messages are “received and understood” accurately✔. Sounds familiar? But what if they are talking to French? Or Chinese? Would people from those countries share the belief😉? I bet you different! China, France, India … 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. They are masters to speak between the lines. Their communication style is sophisticated, nuanced, layered. When confronted with direct and explicit messages they can feel patronized and in the worst case even bullied. So here we are. 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝘃𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴😣. Not the best basics for working successfully. While all it takes is just figuring out 1️⃣ 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 and 2️⃣ taking it into account by doing some finetuning. If I ate a piece of meat everytime I heard this, I’d become a huge moving burger. And yes, I love meat. (And my vegetarian tribe too) 🔴 Stop Selling Features, Start Selling Feelings. As an Executive, you’re doing all the right things.  But are not getting sales. Question is, how are you selling? Try this, Don’t just say 'Our product does X.' Say, 'Imagine how it feels when your life is easier.' Stop selling just the HOW. Tell us the WHY it matters to us. Make us feel like you understand our pain. Make us feel the relief your solution offers. And  Every time you market your product. Be it on On your website, social media, everywhere! Remember, - People don’t remember facts. - We remember feelings. - We’ll forget the specs, but remember how you made us feel. The bottom line? Selling emotions is the secret to selling better. A Simple Shopping Trip Turned into a Conversation on Sustainability A couple of weeks ago, I walked into a store in The Hague for something simple—a pair of pantyhose. As I checked out, I casually mentioned how cold the store felt. The saleslady’s response took me by surprise. She said: “You’d think the architect would have considered sustainability when designing this building. I didn't study much but would’ve added automatic doors to keep the heat in and save energy.” It struck me how easily we can overlook small yet impactful design decisions. Even those without formal education in architecture are thinking about sustainability and how we can do better for our planet. 🌍💡 This everyday exchange is a powerful reminder that meaningful conversations about sustainability can happen anywhere. I love using these 2 questions as an inclusion in a meeting or workshop since 1) As they come from positive psychology, they help to establish a more positive, productive and open mindset. 2) They also satisfy my natural curiosity and need to learn and often give me ideas for subjects to explore. No this is not the French number one condiment! 😄 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 I had the pleasure of being introduced to by Chris Peltier, France's No. 1 pickleball player in doubles and mixed doubles. And a sport I truly enjoyed playing last night for two and a half hours after a 30-minute introduction. For me, it's a friendlier and more dynamic form of tennis that's played on a badminton court. I'd definitely highly recommend having a go at it! I will add in the comment section below a link to 2 very short videos introducing that sport in French or English. A success story: One successful entrepreneur from the Netherlands, although thriving in his field, lived in constant stress. Every morning, he would make sure everything was fine and had anxieties about meetings, changes, and even the commute to work. How to create a better environment for your remote team Recently people started caring more about mental health and well-being *Trust in the outcome of work: Stressing regular check-ups that show there is no trust builds broken relationships with the managers that eventually it make the work environment annoying. *Monitoring and feedback: Make it a safe space by having a clear conversation about what you are both expecting from each other to build up on a solid base. *Better mental health offers: Hire a mindset coach to help them walk through what’s stopping them from what’s stopping them from moving forward. The journey of exploration goes on and never stops. As I prepare for my talk at the event on May 31st in Utrecht, I’m reminded of my time working at Microsoft as an account manager. I was responsible for Mediamarkt, and back then, it felt like I was navigating an all-boys club. I thought I could handle it, but I quickly noticed a pattern: when I smiled too much and was my authentic self, my boundaries were tested. Yet, when I was too harsh and firm with my boundaries, my sales suffered. It took me a while to understand who I needed to be in this dynamic. Just thinking about those days brings back the feeling of spending 10 minutes in my car, gathering the energy to become whoever I needed to be for the day. Don’t get me wrong—my strategy worked. My sales were strong, and my manager was pleased with my performance. But the energy it took to pretend was exhausting. I'm looking forward to host a breakout at the #designthinkingconference on the 11th of October, a workshop called 'Staying with the trouble. Mold it, peel it, squeeze it!' In this workshop participants will immerse themselves in the trouble using our hands as tools for reflection and conceptualization. Why should we do this? When we experience a problem, we tend to jump to conclusions easily and we try to solve it with the first idea that springs into mind. And we’ll soon find out this solutions doesn’t work like we hoped.Before you know, you are running in circles of trial and error. Instead of staying with the trouble, we run the circle as fast as possible. The secret to escape the circle is framing and reframing. Framing is the process of generating meaningful interpretations of the problem, which is characterized by abductive reasoning. Framing is an essential activity of the design process and critical to arrive at innovative solutions. However, it is often skipped because intense engagement in sensemaking to develop deep understanding of the problem and in exploring multiple meaningful interpretations takes a lot of time and it is hard to do. Moreover, our organizations reward quick solutions and don’t facilitate low-output activities like framing. In the workshop you will learn to stay with the trouble and to resist your desire to fix. Instead of solving the problem, we will mold it to see it in all its appearances. We will peel it by revealing our assumptions. And, we will squeeze it to face its unbearable inside. Q&A: "Hi Alistair, Thanks again for the Meetup last week in Utrecht! Can you explain the difference between 'agile in projects', 'adaptive around projects'? I cannot understand it still after a week :)." Great question. To me (repeat: to /me/...) "agile" has to do with tracking rapidly changing requirements within a project - That matches the sense of the word agile, to me. "Adaptive", to me, has to do with tracking cultural changes in the team/org over time, a slower process, once that involves changing the team's structure, norms, habits. So, for example, Spotify is known for being agile: They put out lots of features rapidly in response to market shifts and change their internal architecture as needed. But people who read and believed Henrik Kniberg's "Spotify Model" writeup overlooked the the fact that the real Spotify Model is constantly changing the organizational structure, experimenting and changing to suit the problems they encountered with growing # employees and customer base. The true Spotify Model is not locking onto a single org model, but adapting the org to the times. Agilel + Adaptive. I think you need both.
