Here’s why: 1️⃣ 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 Over 13.8 million jobs across Europe depend on the auto industry, including countless Dutch suppliers. However, as demand for European cars declines, suppliers face revenue loss and job cuts. Supporting this sector supports employment across Europe. 2️⃣ 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The industry drives nearly a third of Europe’s R&D, fueling advancements in clean and sustainable technology. But a slow transition to electric vehicles jeopardizes progress, making continued support crucial. 3️⃣ 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 With rising imports from Asia, retaining a strong automotive sector in Europe helps maintain economic resilience and safeguards against over-reliance on global supply chains. 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐕𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬: 𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩 🚗 May was a challenging month for electric vehicles (EVs) in the Netherlands, one of the EU’s leading markets for EV technology. Here are the key takeaways: 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: A total of 13,174 EVs hit Dutch roads in May, comprising both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Unfortunately, this marked a 13% year-on-year decline. 𝐀𝐥𝐥-𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: All-electric models saw a 12% slump, with 9,680 registrations during the month. 𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐕: Plug-in hybrid deliveries declined by 15%, totaling 3,494 units. 𝐍𝐞𝐰-𝐂𝐚𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Overall new-car registrations in the country dropped by 14% compared to the previous year. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞: Plug-ins accounted for 46.5% of the new-car market, with BEVs alone holding a 34% share. 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨𝐩: The Tesla Model Y reclaimed the top spot as the most popular EV in the Netherlands, narrowly beating the Volvo EX30. 🚘 This year marks the 65th anniversary since small Dutch DAF sent shockwaves through the automotive industry with the launch of the iconic Variomatic transmission on their DAF 600. Stepless, convenient and above all handsfree, the continuously variable transmission, also known as CVT, overcame the complexity of the manual shift. With the Variomatic, the DAF 600 became the first small, affordable car equipped with an automatic transmission which helped democratise driving and heralded a new era in automatic car transmissions.   🛵 With traffic increasing and cities congesting, new forms of commuter transportation gained popularity in the latter part of the 20th century. The motor scooter was one of them. However, the fidgety, complicated operation of a manual clutch restricted broad acceptance and limited everyday use. It was only with the adoption of a direct descendent of the Variomatic CVT that the motor scooter really took off as a commuter favourite. The autonomous, reliable and easy to use transmission boosted accessibility of the motor scooter to a much larger demographic. Up to this day, the scooter remains a fixture in city traffic and the CVT is still the undisputed standard.   🚴‍♂️ High time for the proven CVT to make its next conquest. Clean, nimble and fast, there can be no doubt that the eBike is the better mobility solution for the future. However, as was the case for cars and motor scooters, bicycle gear shifting will need to catch up with its time if we want to encourage everyday commuters out of their cars and off their scooters. Current gearing solutions are messy, sensitive to maintenance and prone to breakdowns. Today is #WorldEVDay. Started by Ade Thomas 5 years ago in collaboration with ABB to raise awareness and support the transition to electric vehicles. But so what? 🔥 In 2021, "transport" was responsible for 26% of CO2 emissions - and cars account for roughly half of that figure. 💚 EV's produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air quality. For many of us the call to "stop climate change" sounds worthy, but relating it to any action we might undertake feels futile. But this is something we can do, which we know will have an almost immediate impact on the quality of our lives and of those around us. At Voqa this is something we feel we can hang our hat on and has become our reason for building our next generation charger.
