#Design changes #behaviour. Behaviour drives design. Is all behaviour good? Is all design good? Should design support desired behaviour, even if this behaviour is “bad”? Last week we discussed the #Smombies. (#Smartphone #Zombies) in #Paris at the Urban AI conference. Here is an example from #Schiphol Airport where there has clearly been a designed intervention to support a particular behaviour that may or may not be desirable. Should cities fight the Smombies? Should cities just follow behaviour? Do cities have the right to control us? Do they?

As a freelancer, my CV is my primary "battering ram" when pitching for new projects. But especially the "Employment History" part has been something I have experimented with. As a UX'er I try to make my it as short and visual as possible. But I am also wondering, who is my primary target group? Is it a "Human Recruiter" or a "Generative AI", scanning for keywords? I have opted for the human approach, creating a visual short form of my employment history, but what are your thoughts? Is it too short? Too Visual? In industries like healthcare and medtech, a poor user experience isn’t just suboptimal—it's dangerous.   When bad user experiences lead to inefficient work, increased user error, and less user engagement overall, it puts patients at risk.   Many of the problems result from the types of issues we deal with every day: from non-intuitive flows to problems with information hierarchy and prioritization.   In short, they are the result of designing a product only against a set of functional requirements instead of seeking to understand and then designing in support of users’ actual workflows.   We saw this a few years ago when we set out to redesign the displays for ventilators.   Physicians relied on the displays to monitor and manage the care of patients on life support. But an abundance of concern for patient safety had led to layers upon layers of legacy screens. The resulting displays were more noise than signal.   The simplified display that we designed reduced noise to signal, and enabled us to add new functionality that served physicians' actual workflows. Do you work in product design? Are you aware that your job will go through massive change in just a few years? Here are a few hints on how it might change. But we start with WHY it will change. Part of the Green Deal of the European Union is targeted to reduce the environmental impact of the products we consume and a main focus is on the design of products and production. ESPR, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products takes aim at just that, with Digital Product Passports (DPP) spearheading that effort. Digital Product Passports will start being required from 2027, industry by industry. DPP's will be required to be provided with products sold in the European Union, providing substantial information on circularity, environmental impact, certificates of responsible production, repairability and responsible disposal. Simply, such information will be as much part of your product as function and physical attributes. No DPP? No sale! Obviously, to be able to assemble DPP's, the producers in the last leg of the process will need to obtain the data from all earlier steps of the supply chain. You see why your job will change? 🔵 For each aspect of your design, you will need to find the environmental impact of the choices at hand, the DPP data of all inputs. 🔵 Expect product design to take much longer, especially initially, as such information isn't likely to readily be whizzed out of back pockets 🔵 Over time, you'll probably modify your supplier preferences based on their ability and willingness to supply such data 🔵 But it's not only their ability to present such data, but also their ability to provide it continuously in a way that integrates with your systems to provide DPP data in your turn 🔵 Repairability and ease of repairing will be more important aspects of your design work 🔵 As will be the possibility of "deconstructing" products for responsible disposal 🔵 Maybe a new profession will evolve; Environmental Designer? It’s Page 2 of #DearDesigner 👏 Let’s talk about the ever-popular concept of #DesignThinking! Dear Designer, Design thinking is not just a design principle but a mindset — and a pretty universal one at that. As Arne Van Oosterom puts it, “Design thinking is a mindset,” a way of seeing and solving problems which has been embraced by several industries, from engineering to aeronautics, and medicine. Design thinking is both an art and a science and studies show that shockingly, design thinking-the act, has been around for about a century 😵 even though we just came about the name, over a couple of decades ago. It reminds me of a story I read a while ago that captures the essence of design thinking. It was about a truck wedged under a bridge, causing a traffic nightmare. First responders, engineers, firefighters, you name it — everyone showed up, each with a complex solution to get that truck out, such as chipping away the truck in parts, or breaking a part of the bridge, among others. Hours went by, and they weren’t getting anywhere. And there came this young boy, passing. He stared, observed the whole situation — looked at the bridge, the road, the truck and shouted, “Why not just deflate the truck’s tires and tow it out?” 😱 Simple right? But why was it that no one thought about it until then? The answer was right there all along, and it didn’t really require thinking out of the box. That brings me to the definition of Design Thinking I came across just a couple of days ago and I really loved it. As Clint Runge put it, “Design thinking is not about thinking outside the box, but on its edge, its corner, its flap, and under its barcode.” 😄 . The most obvious solutions are the ones hardest to come by because of the self-imposed constraints we work within, or the urge to “think big,” or “outside the box” 🙄 as we are often encouraged to, which more often than not, lead us way off-track 🤦‍♀️ . So, Dear Designer, I challenge you: as you go through your day, look for the design stories around you. Say to yourself “that’s an example of great design” or “that’s a really bad design” and have fun 🤸‍♀️ exploring the “why”. Found this helpful? Grateful to have spent four wondrous days at "#menschundcomputer" in Karlsruhe. Met so many inspiring people in UX and attended countless interesting and educational talks, presentations, workshops, and working groups. My learnings: 🧩 UX fits everywhere: Talks on IT security, gamification, and AI showed that UX integrates seamlessly with all of them. 🧩 I'm not done learning: Even UX professionals with 25+ years of experience told me they still learn new things. So, no matter my experience level, I'll never be done learning in UX. 🧩 We are the change we want to see: Every conversation revolved around striving to improve usability daily. Who else takes time off work to think about working better, designing better, leading better, communicating better—to be better? Just the 614 amazing people at MuC24. 🧩 Look to the academic track more often: In daily life, I don't always have time to read papers and consider how to apply them. But that doesn't mean I should deprioritize it. Let’s continue answering the questions our team got at the Into Design Systems Community & Conference. This is the sixth one: “What insights would you want to get from a Design System Associate joining a DS team? Since they are generally focused on their specific product, their role is not to think in terms of "systems", but rather an individual product and often you wouldn't want product-specific features in your DS.” First, let's clarify who a 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 is. Varya and Irina’s presentation touched on how to engage in-house design and developer communities. This engagement encourages them not only to use the design system but also to contribute actively. One effective strategy is 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀. Many are familiar with the concept of a Design System Ambassador. This role involves a design system team member joining a product team to help with specific tasks like adopting components or upgrading the library version. This helps the design system team gain more context and build long-term relationships. Similarly, a product team member can join the Design System team temporarily, a role we call 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲. These associates bring product-specific insights and can help the design system team understand real-world applications better. Typical tasks for a Design System Associate might include: - Documentation improvements - Product-specific improvements onto DS - Refining components for another team Now, regarding the insights gained from a Design System Associate, who typically has a product-focused perspective, Varya’s response to the question was: “Design System team members often lack the detailed context of individual products. When a Design System Associate joins the team, they can provide valuable insights from their product-focused perspective. This exchange fosters mutual learning: product team members gain a deeper understanding of the design system's capabilities, while Design System team members learn about specific product needs and challenges. This dual exchange ensures that both sides are better informed and aligned, ultimately leading to a more cohesive and effective design system." This mutual learning is invaluable. Product team members often become 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺, promoting its benefits and encouraging its use across the organization. This exchange enriches both teams, fostering a deeper understanding and stronger collaboration.
