I am pleased to share that WWF-International Director General Kirsten Schuijt has authored an op-ed which sets out our shared WWF global network perspective on the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Scope 3 requirements and the role of market instruments. Given the highly technical nature of the topic, we’ve also posted a supporting discussion paper ( https://lnkd.in/gKKiwKBE )   Scope 3 emissions, the indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, account for three-quarters of an average company’s climate emissions, but for many sectors, including technology, retail, and consumer goods, that number can top 95 percent. Complex value chains and accounting rules have left many companies struggling to develop comprehensive scope 3 inventories and the appropriate mitigation strategies that can yield measurable emission reductions.   The op-ed and discussion paper together address the need for SBTi (the gold standard for voluntary corporate greenhouse gas goal setting) to simplify target setting and give companies more ways to invest in emissions reductions in and out of their value chains. ​​Credible corporate climate action at scale is essential to meet net zero targets and we will continue to actively engage with SBTi as it revises Scope 3 requirements to promote solutions which are feasible, guided by science and grounded in good governance.    With climate-related impacts happening at an ever-increasing speed, we need to get to a net-zero economy as soon as possible. "For the consumer packaged goods sector, the aim of reuse is to significantly reduce the virgin materials being used. But an ineffective, poorly executed system can perpetuate the need for even more virgin materials by failing to recover reusables after they’ve been released onto the market. Reuse is about systems before packaging." Yes, thanks for this, Upstream. And the same could be said for recyclable packaging. A material that is hypothetically recyclable but doesn't have wide-spread systems in place (and/or a viable end market) shouldn't be called "recyclable." #packaging #CPG #reuse #recycle #sustainability #petrochemicals #plastic

It's #Agriculture Day today at #COP29 in Baku, a great occasion to share an important achievement in decarbonizing global food supply chains. KERNEL has been chosen as a partner of the Jumbo Impact Fund - the supply chain engagement program developed by our client Jumbo Supermarkten. The program seeks to facilitate the reduction of Jumbo's Scope 3 GHG emissions by co-financing targeted projects within their value chain. As part of the Jumbo Impact Fund, we’ve ensured that our production of bottled sunflower oil is low-carbon. This is achieved by supplying green electricity—generated from sunflower seed husks—from the combined heat and power plant (CHP) directly to the oilseed processing plant. I see this initiative as a strong signal that interest in decarbonizing food supply chains is growing steadily. Interestingly, this momentum appears to be driven more by end consumers than by agricultural commodity traders, contrary to what I initially expected. Where there is interest, specific demand for low-carbon food supply will likely follow. Kernel is well-positioned to meet this demand by delivering decarbonization measures across our production chain, leveraging regenerative farming practices, innovations and carbon footprint management.

Really interesting to hear a different perspective from Probable Futures' Spencer Glendon at The Nest Climate Campus. His focus on #adaptation was unique from the other discussions this week. One of his more provocative assertions: "There are no solutions. There are myriad strategies." 🙌 The European Investment Bank (EIB) and WWF join forces to boost climate adaptation in Europe 🙌 This is fantastic news. With Europe facing increasingly intense floods and droughts, the EIB is teaming up with WWF to accelerate climate adaptation in Europe by mobilising early-stage funding for nature-based solutions (NbS) to help buffer societies and economies against the worsening impacts of the climate and biodiversity crises. And we aiming high. The final Scope 3 Peer Group Member Challenge from last week was:❓ "How are you tackling EUDR alongside Scope 3 carbon reductions without becoming a distraction?" ❓ How are you approaching it? The answers are relevant for the Nature & Biodiversity Peer Group too! 💥 Clarifying which suppliers are key for the variety of needs we have to ask them questions for all at once. Doing this for CSRD and EUDR together, but also linked to decarbonization needs and asks 💥 Different groups internally are tackling - so we keep it separate 💥 I wish I knew how to as it is very time consuming to work with EUDR! 💥 It is a challenge to prioritize and keep momentum with scope 3 , when lot of resources are focused on EUDR rest of the year. We are designing some working groups on this topic, We would love to connect with peers working on this!  💥 Not an issue in terms of human resources but in terms of investment decision. 💥 This work is being addressed by a separate team focused on regulation and reporting. Once requirements are clear (supplier-facing action/data gathering/contracting, etc) it is likely to be implemented as a part of our Forest Positive and GHG procurement/sourcing strategy. Education is already underway with sourcing/procurement on regulation in general and on interventions in the Forest Positive space. 💥 We are doing a full on legal and audit review of EUDR while trying to not distract from other work. We are early on here. So I'm able to focus on our 2025 short term goals. 💥 We are not the importers of record, so we are checking our suppliers have the measures in place, but not actively reporting. 💥 We have a team that manages our Forest positive workstream. EUDR is priority due to timeline and regulatory nature. Central climate team is carrying the torch on scope 3 reductions in the meantime. 💥 We have had to separate the workstreams completely to avoid this distraction, which has enabled enhanced communications between departments. 💥 We have hired consultants to undertake a gap assessment of what we need to do to move from where we are now to being compliant with EUDR. This is a MUST DO, so inevitably is a distraction from 100% focus on decarbonisation. 💥 We have made it our focus and developed a separate team to work on our project. Additionally have developed JV’s with large corporate partners to support our project and vision. 💥 We're piggy-backing our CBAM solution, as both use a customs data set, this has massively streamlined our efforts. 💥 We've set internal and external policies and are monitoring but truthfully not doing enough in this space yet.

Do you think within value chain emissions reductions are really important? Do you want to be sure we’re using the best methods and science to quantify and account for the myriad emission reduction and climate action projects we’ll need to deploy to decarbonize massive, globally distributed, interconnected and overlapping supply chains? We do too! Very pleased to share the preliminary guidance developed under the The Advanced and Indirect Mitigation (AIM) Platform for consultation. AIM is probably the most important accounting standard you’ve never heard of. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed nerding out on the nuances of within value chain accounting with the rest of the incredible board. High intregrity accounting rules of the road that work in the real world will underpin (and direct) the net zero economy transition so getting this right matters a lot. Interesting external perspective on the #COP29 process - acknowledging both the farce the process has become and the challenges this presents for climate experts. Harsh words on the #EWS space but largely reflective of the concerns many of us share about a COP pavilion circus dominated by staid panels, jargony talking points and nice photo ops between the COP usual suspects: ""Climate humanitarianism has become more sophisticated – but that has brought about new versions of the infuriating and meaningless language that thrives in policy bubbles. “Money makes the world cool down” is among the phrases I heard for the first time, and hopefully never will again. Early-warning systems are the “last mile, but also the first mile” is another. These cant platitudes are often said by very clever people. But they don’t seem to realise they’re only talking to others just like them, and will likely continue to do so as long as the unfortunate practice continues. They’re also typical of the culture of an international summitry system, where polished but often superficial ways of talking are widespread. Great work here from Josh Lerner and People Powered. I wrote a paper for University of Sussex Science Policy Research Unit in 2000 called the two wave theory of public participation. Essentially arguing that we had two major waves of democratic innovation one driven by the civil rights movements starting in 60s; and a second driven mainly by the environmental movement getting momentum in the 80s and 90s. That's clearly an over simplification. What I really like about Josh's shift from waves to ecosystems is it better describes how we need to think about democratic innovation now and it's essentially contextual nature.
