Aim higher than "It works, doesn't it!" Markus Travaille shares his take on creating testable code. Hyperautomation is great, and Mendix really makes this possible for many developers and companies that need quickly implemented-software solutions. However, we should never sacrifice quality for speed when the application needs to support a company beyond a simple proof of concept. Keeping the speed in your development while maintaining a high level of quality starts with creating testable code. Many of the best practices preached by Mendix already help towards this goal. 🚀 Salesforce Field Service Partner Advisory Board Recap I’m excited to share a recap of our participation in this year's Salesforce Field Service (SFS) Partner Advisory Board (PAB) meeting, held in the beautiful city of Amsterdam in April! Every year, in addition to our monthly meetings, the PAB meets in person which provides a unique opportunity for in-depth discussions and direct interactions with Salesforce product leadership. This dedicated session allows us to receive the latest updates, share feedback, and discuss what’s crucial for our solutions and ecosystem with viewpoints from both Salesforce partners and their clients. The post-event dinner was also a fantastic occasion for PAB members to discuss product strategies, market trends, and collaborative efforts to enhance SFS for everyone. How to make better testable Mendix code! Today I attended two workshops with Mendix developers, testers and high code developers about (unit) testing Mendix apps. One of the questions was: "How to test Mendix microflows?" One topic dealt with the concept of changing a microflow to make it more testable and, if necessary, split pieces of it in sub microflows. In high code development this is a common practice. In Mendix not (yet). Although it might seem overkill to create submicroflows with only one or two activities, it makes their output much better testable. Furthermore it also makes it possible to test the rest of the encompassing logic with stubbed data. A concrete example of today's workshop: The microflow under test changes an attribute value of an object based on a variable that uses the "CurrentDayTime + some other logic". The question was: "how can we test the situation that the year is changing?". You could do this once a year at new years eve, or mess with the systemdate, but this might be undesired and/or complicated. We agreed that it would be better to create a separate microflow that creates the CurrentDateTime variable and use the output of this microflow as a input parameter for the next one. In this way you can provide any date as input for your test (stubbing), while the logic of your application remains the same. This simple example illustrates that Mendix testing and development are interconnected. Adapting Mendix apps to make them better testable is not yet common, but with a maturing Mendix ecosystem it will become more important over time.
