For me, one of the most entertaining Azure on Air podcasts we recorded during #INTEGRATE 2024 was with my fellow Dutchmen and long-time integration community friend Steef-Jan Wiggers. During the recording, Steef-Jan highlighted his integration journey from working with IBM mainframes to integrating systems with Azure Integration Services. We discuss the challenges and strategies involved in migrating critical business processes, but also the benefits of Azure Integration Services, such as improved observability, flexibility, and the ability to support new business requirements and revenue streams. The transition from Power BI Premium capacities to Fabric capacities is in full swing. This means a change in how you manage and purchase compute capacity, as Fabric capacities are only available through an Azure subscription. In Microsoft licensing, details matter a lot.🧐 This update to #Dataverse pay-as-you-go meters is therefore more significant than you might realize. PAYG is an alternative to the normal prepaid licensing model of #PowerPlatform. It allows you to pay for the low-code platform services based on what you have consumed. This is done via setting up billing policies that link to an Azure subscription. "Sounds great, let's go all in!" You better not. You see, the price of the postpaid flexibility comes with a cost penalty from Microsoft. The prices are higher for resources that you pay for only after usage. Makes business sense. One pain point in the PAYG model has been Dataverse storage capacity. As many of us know, it's pretty expensive to purchase as an add-on. $48 per GB/month in the pay-as-you-go model, and $40 in prepaid, too.😬 Luckily, there is seeded Dataverse storage capacity associated with prepaid licenses. So, if you've purchased #PowerApps premium licenses or #Dynamics365 enterprise apps, ever licensed seat gives you a bit more storage in the tenant level pool. With enough licensed seats and moderate environment sizes, perhaps you won't need to buy any storage add-on licenses.😌 Unless you wanted to use PAYG in some of your environments. Previously, it you enabled PAYG, the environment stopped consuming storage from the tenant-wide pool. After the first 1 gig, it all went to the costly PAYG meter. Now, thanks to the recently announced environment level capacity allocation feature in Dataverse, you have a way to avoid this! If you have free capacity available in your tenant, you can allocate that to a PAYG environment, yet not have to pay via the PAYG meter. Massive savings potential!🤑 If you go over the allocated capacity, the overage billing can then be handled with the Azure subscription assigned to the policy. The same mechanism is now also available for non-PAYG environments, giving you more control over how Power Platform costs are allocated in your organization. Will this make pay-as-you-go a more feasible option in your tenant? Or are there still some blockers with using this billing model?

Avoid stalling development with Mendix due to growing a complex monolith. Use QSM from Software Improvement Group to keep applications maintainable and secure. I just got off a call with Mark Groot in which he showed me around. I got super excited about the possibilities QSM offers in a mature low-code practice. Mendix itself is offering more and more in terms of governance, which is a valuable trend anyway. QSM also offers benchmarks against many thousands of other Mendix applications and insights that I have not had at my disposal before. At CLEVR, we are always looking for methods and support to develop even better software. It's nice to have another tool in the toolbox. I see a lot of value in having insight into relationships between modules and microflows. Where is logic duplicated? And which modules are intertwined in spaghetti? Establishing a target architecture in advance makes it easier to follow it as a team. Not every team member needs to be an expert in order to develop quality software. However, it does require the necessary insight, which QSM provides. No doubt, more personal experiences will follow once I have more hands-on experience with the tool. Hosting Mendix Advanced Developer Courses allows me to have great discussions about more complex topics, which then triggers me to dig deeper into some of them, in this case: error handling. I already wrote one blog about it and created a sample project with 14 different scenarios, you can download from the #marketplace (link in comments👇🏻). But it was time to extend the logic using error handling inside a loop. I my latest Medium post, you can read all about my journey discovering the dos and don'ts. But I can share some key findings already ✅ Using default error handling or error end events inside a sub microflow inside a loop will return the generic "an error occurred.." error message ✅ Custom error handling with rollback might lead to unexpected or unwanted behavior when used inside a loop ✅ Using custom error handling without rollback, but include rollback activities will give you a lot of flexibility, but you need to carefully think about what version of an object you want to keep ✅ Rollback of an object you created will not remove it from a list it was added to, so it is still committed when committing the list. ✅ Committing inside the sub microflow in the loop has a different impact as committing in the main flow.
