** INDUSTRY SAFETY ALERT ** Summary: While rolling out air and water hoses across an AFC installation, a fitter was asked to connect a 50 mm air hose to a manifold before the hose was rolled out. The fitter removed a retaining staple to connect into a 50 mm airline supply. The end cap ejected, hitting the fitter in the leg just below the kneecap. The fitter was unaware that the line was pressurised. Recommendations to industry: Mine operators should have procedures in place to prevent exposing workers to the hazards of stored energy. Mine operators should ensure workers are trained on these procedures, and that all workers are aware of the status of stored energy sources. Just a quick follow up on the previous posts regarding Floating subs. Please keep in mind that your machine operator has to be trained how to make best use of such equipment. As some of you may know we and our associated company TDS use this equipment on our own rigs. A floating sub has n certain length of stroke depending on the variant. Ideally, if your penetration rate is sufficient the sub should either be fully extended or in and out movement has to be observed. This is the best way to get the most of the benefits out of your investment. Unfortunately there are cases where penetration is difficult especially if you do not have enough weight in your string and the formation is tuff. On these occasions the operator can force the hammer to penetrate but this will make the Floating sub bottom out. This is not all bad news. These subs have buffer plates build in that is made of special shock absorbent and yet durable material. It work much like the bump stop on your bakkies suspension. A last line of defence. But ideally the operator has to return to allowing movement in the stroke as soon as penetration rates returns to normal. You all know haw expensive the bearings in the rotation head are and how long your downtime can be when servicing these units. The solution is Floating subs. I can not put enough emphasis on its value to your operational costs. As mentioned we make a variant for any application at the best prices on the market, yet build them as strong as physics allow.
