Financial business case model for an offgrid solar plant in Madagascar (Engineers Without Borders)
In the rural community of Andavadoaka in Madagascar a mini-grid connected to a 60 kWp PV solar power plant (including a storage component) is developed by Eosol. In the rural community of Andavadoaka in Madagascar a mini-grid connected to a 60 kWp PV solar power plant (including a storage component) is developed by Eosol. However, since there are multiple problems regarding both engineering as policy aspects, the income of the project is currently limited and not economically sustainable on a commercial level. Engineers Without Borders has teamed up with Eosol to enhance the plant on all aspects, in order to provide renewable, reliable and safe electricity supply to the local community in the upcoming decades, on a 24/7 basis.
As small part of the broad Engineers Without Borders scope, we developed an operational financial model for the solar plant to improve its economic feasibility. This model formed, amongst others, the basis for the pricing strategy of electricity and as a decision- and analysis tool for future investments. Based on this model, a new pricing strategy is implemented and alternative business cases were developed that will enhance the economic feasibility of the plant.
