Are cold emails dead? Over the last 3 months, our small team acquired 30 webshops through a channel many considered dead: Cold emails. During the predictable revenue boom, cold emails initially worked well. However, as everyone jumped on the bandwagon, inboxes got flooded, and the success of cold emails took a hit. Still, for a cash-strapped startup like ours, cold emails remained one of the cheapest ways to experiment. Here's our playbook: 1. Focused ICP We narrowed down our ICP to understand their exact characteristics. It's a common move, but it kept paying off. 2. Avoid being "salesy" We ditched the numbers, salesy language, and aggressive CTAs. Instead, we wrote like a friend with a great idea to share. 3. Create awareness - let the prospects do the research We skipped the product pitch in emails. Instead, we created awareness by talking about pain, value, and opportunity. Still, prospects did their research before meetings, knowing exactly what we offer. 4. Local language We always write to people in their own language. Danish companies in Danish, Swedish companies in Swedish - and so on. 5. Short subjects No fancy sales subject lines. Just short and sweet, sometimes just one word, to grab attention. 6. Data-driven approach We closely analyze data from email campaigns, conduct A/B tests, review open rates, assess click rates, and evaluate conversion metrics. All our decision-making and optimization is based on data. It's 2024 and people are tired of being sold to everywhere. Creating awareness and getting inbound interest is the goal of commercial leaders, but ads, SEO, and partnerships are an expensive and long-term strategy. Using cold emailing as a cost-effective alternative to create awareness might be the way to grow, especially for startups.

I love listening to the Adyen Earnings Calls, recently had a watch of the latest one H2 2023 (will add the link in the comments). It's as transparent dialogue as you are going to get for a public company, and it also describes the market other private payments companies are playing in which is super helpful. A non-obvious, spotlight on an interesting question that was asked: How often to your enterprise customers negotiate their pricing? Clearly answered, there is no standardised way of negotiating pricing. Adyen uses tiers (as most do) and open up renegotiation when contracts are up for renewal. A deeper question to ask is "What would prompt a customer to attempt to renegotiate their pricing with their provider between contract renewal dates?" As platforms and marketplaces embed payments into their offering (and start to think like payment companies) they will also need to think about how they manage customer negotiation dynamics with each and every customer of theirs. For example: If a platform has a thousand customers using their embedded payments offering, they really need to strengthen this muscle to keep their customers happy and growing at the same time. Individual pricing, unique to their payment method mix, becomes a key differentiator when compared to other competitors who may offer blanket pricing without any context. Take: The more innovative and dynamic pricing strategies will win over time, when compared to the traditional rigid ones. I pulled out some other points of focus form the call and will put in the comments, if anyone might find that interesting 😄

‘But Sjoerd, what happens when I move back to Spain? And when will I have access to this money?’👇 We are wrapping up with Jorge, our 35 year-old BDR manager. He wants to know how and when he can take out this money he invests in his pension. There are 2 main options! 1. You can move your pension to a comparable plan in the country where you decide to live. 2. You can keep your pension where it is and let it grow tax-free until you are ready to take it out. To the best of my knowledge, Spain doesn’t have similar options. Jorge needs to get local knowledge on what would be wise to do. If I like my pension fund, I’ll keep it where it is for high returns and low fees. ‘Ok, and when can I take it out?’ You need to check your particular pension plan. With most occupational pensions you can take early retirement from age 50. The trick is to not do that. You don’t touch your pension until you need it. When you’re wealthy enough to retire at age 50, you should consider living on other investments while your pension keeps growing tax free. ‘And how will I be able to take my pension?’ 1️⃣ You can take out a lump sum of 25% of the total pot (tax-free up to €200,000, the next €300,000 at 20% tax). 2️⃣ You have a choice of what to do with the remaining 75%: 💸You can buy an annuity (salary for life). 📈You can leave it in an Approved Retirement Fund (ARF), a fund that grows tax free that you can withdraw from. 💰Or you can take it as a taxable lump sum. ‘And what about taxes?’ You will be paying taxes on the pension income you receive according to the local tax law where you decide to live. With that Jorge is happy and confident that pension AVC’s are an amazing investment option available to us in Ireland. Will you join me tomorrow to celebrate a big ‘Become a Millionaire’ milestone?

📢 🔔Dutch #B2B #SaaS companies we are exited to announce scalinglab from 23𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘢𝘺- 6𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘫𝘶𝘯𝘦 2024 Building an enterprise go-to-market model can be challenging and B2B SaaS companies do not always have a blueprint for building those partnerships that will enable them to scale outside the Netherlands.🌏🛒 #GenAI AI has the potential to replace services with software, leading to massive revenue growth, but the companies that are fully benefiting from this momentum are the ones able to adapt and adopt this technology the fastest. As for the organizations on the verge of scaling, the growing pains often take a significant toll on hiring and the team’s structure. Balancing industry events and branded events is crucial for success. With 25 years in hightech marketing, here are my key insights: **Attending Industry Events:** - Choose strategic events where your audience is active. - Plan and schedule key meetings. - Follow up to convert connections into opportunities. **Creating Branded Events:** - Control the narrative and experience. - Be mindful of high costs and potential low attendance. - When successful, they boost brand loyalty and leave lasting impressions. **My Recommendations:** 1. Use a 3:1 ratio – Attend 3 industry events for every 1 branded event. 2. Measure ROI and adjust your strategy. 3. Innovate with virtual events or intimate dinners. Growing your brand, community, or revenue starts with hard effort and cold outreach — but you can turn that around. New to the stage? Then nobody knows you and it’s difficult to convince people of your benefits. I experienced this when I recruited brand ambassadors for Meet5: Meet new people in the Netherlands. We had just started, our community was small and the benefits of being a brand ambassador were vague to new users. I’ve spent days on the phone, trying to recruit ambassadors. And I succeeded. This changed. Soon enough, the potential ambassadors came to me. Thanks to existing ambassadors, who spread the positive word. The people you work and interact with will talk about you with others. So better invest in building good relationships with them. Here are some useful points you could focus on: 1. Communicate clearly and on time 2. Act like a guide: give them as many information, tools and context as possible 3. Make them feel appreciated and worthy. I care about the last point a lot. We’re human-beings and emotional. With the right words, you can make a huge impact on other people’s lives. And the better you make people feel, the more positive words they’ll share with potential prospects. And when these prospects hear about the positive stories, they’ll come to you.

From 'feeling' your CS team makes an impact to quantifying the impact. We did a workshop at Pavilion Amsterdam on how to use Impact Drivers to quantify & customer success attribution. -> The SaaS landscape has shifted from a Growth At All Cost (GAAC) model to a Profitable Efficient Growth (PEG) model. This means that it's more important than ever to focus on proactive customer success. -> Traditional customer success metrics (NRR, GRR, etc.) are lagging indicators. This can make it difficult to prove the value of customer success and to incentivize CSMs to focus on the right activities. -> Impact Drivers help to bridge this gap. Impact Drivers are high value activities that are directly tied to customer outcomes. By tracking and measuring Impact Drivers, CSMs can demonstrate their value and focus on activities that drive real business results. Thanks Koen Stam & André Bressel for organising! Want a free website performance audit? I’m looking for a website to use in my https://perfnow.nl/ talk. What I need is a site with: • A fair number of third-party scripts • An owner willing to let me experiment on a dev server to see the relative impact of perf improvements • An owner willing to either help validate that third-party scripts are still work or willing to give me access so I can check myself • An owner that will let me publish the results of my tests and talk about them at the conference The site owner would benefit from the following: • Free performance audit with an emphasis on how to speed up third-party scripts • If the experiments are successful, they can deploy them and speed up their site • Publicity at the conference and on our blog • Answers about their site performance and what they can do to improve it (beyond just third-party scripts) Does anyone have any suggestions on good candidate sites?

“We just met for the first time in person, but it feels like we’ve been friends for a while.” Scaling a company in a new country means many of my colleagues are spread across the globe. Outside of our Dutch pod, we have a wide range of nationalities on our team that we don't spend much time with. .. In theory, this can be challenging for building meaningful connections. Most of our face time is work-related and on a screen. .. In reality, it's all about who is on your team. Five months at Kanpla have taught me the importance of people within an organization: 🌟 We're building a global team together, this can bring obstacles and frustrations. Embrace those and use them to improve immediately. 🌟 The connections we form, even online and infrequent, can be just as meaningful as those made in an office. Find ways to get your people together virtually and physically. 🌟 Different backgrounds, experiences, and opinions make our connection richer. Encourage people to take ownership, speak up and share often (failures, successes, non-work topics). It's how we show personality and vulnerability. Sharing this post today to celebrate the power of distance and the great people I am surrounded and supported by. Bente Kanpla
