𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? Recently I was with a customer developing software products using multiple scrum teams. When teams started working on a certain feature, only high level architecture was defined. This might leave nice responsibilities to the scrum team. But it is not helping in developing efficiently. Additional discussions are needed to clear out the architecture further. This slows you down. And the architectural outcome might be more complex; you might need more time to develop. Having architectural design well in place not only enables efficient sprints. It also enables developing reusable software. Which really accelerates your development cycles. It allows you to build on proven, tested components rather than starting from scratch each time. Regardless of how you handle architectural design, it’s crucial to prepare the necessary level of detail before the sprint that implements the functionality begins. Whether it's work for a dedicated architect or the Scrum team itself, it’s essential to organize this effectively. Curious to hear your perspective on this. A successful workshop feels awesome! This week I used several agile games again to teach and deeply anchor agile concepts. Time will tell, whether this workshop group gets long-term value out of it. But my experience tells me that it's much more likely because of the games! One of the many games was the "Boss Worker Game" that you see in the game cheat sheet. Continuous Everything demystified What is Continuous Everything (CE) about? Since I started to write the 17 books about CE, I mentioned that this term is less understood as I expected. Everybody talks about Continuous Testing, Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment et cetera so Continuous Everything should be easy to grasp I thought. To bridge this gap I composed this small blog to demistify the term CE using concrete examples. Let me introduce some CE aspect areas: Continuous Testing This aspect area of CE aims to realise a Shift left in feedback of the DTAP street where 80% of the bugs are found in the development environment using test driven development instead of 80% in the acceptance environment. Continuous Integration This aspect area of CE aims to programme software using short lived branches in order to prevent the merge hell. Continuous Deployment This aspect area of CE aims to reduce the time to market of new functionaliteit or adjusted existing functionality. It includes both dark launching (invisible deployments) as well as releases in many ways. The frequency vary from seconds, to minutes, hours and days instead of four times per year. Continuous SLA This aspect area of CE focuses on the decrease of the SLA lifetime. Not each year but each month the SLA is reviewed based on value stream mapping to find the bottleneck is solve this in the comming month. Continuous auditing This aspect area of CE focuses on automatic gathering of evidence by build-in controls to make sure risks are in control all the time instead of yearly. 𝐃𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 "𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭!" 🧪 It was the last day at work of my colleague. The team prepared a farewell gift. 🎁 A t-shirt with the slogan: "Let's Experiment!" I was curious about it. Apparently, that sentence was used on a daily basis by the Agile Coach for anything. "We don't have testers!" "-Let's experiment!" "Our preprod environment is unstable." "-Let's experiment!" "Our Tribe Lead micromanages us! " "-Let's experiment!" And the list goes on. However, it didn't mean much. You could foresee the Agile Coach's reply. "𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭!" 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬. Why? 3 reasons: ❌ No improvement ❌ Just a funny phrase ❌ Ideas were not validated 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞. It doesn't mean go with the flow or improvise. Instead: ✅ You need to start with a hypothesis ✅ We are looking for empirical evidence ✅ It supports our beliefs or disconfirms them P.S. Last day of the Online Scrum Master summit 2024. As for the previous days, the topics look exciting today and spark my curiosity. As always, Bob Galen 🇺🇦's session looks promising, as I hear a lot of Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches telling me not enough attention is given to what they bring to their team(s). Well, could it be that we are falling short on communicating that, on making it visible to others? Consequence is that when faced with budget constraints, organizations usually get rid of their coaches first. In 2018 Sjoerd Kranendonk and I wrote: "Many in “the business” just shrug when you mention Scrum, to them little has changed. Apart from teams making more noise and a ludicrous amount of wall decoration in the shape of self adhesive colorful square pieces of paper, little has changed." And finally I seem to consistently work in product teams that combine discovery and delivery every sprint. Enabling us to deliver business value every sprint. They still shrug, as it doesn't matter and never mattered. Delivering fast what users need does matter however. Let's hope the next big idea doesn't take 6 years to get implemented.

What's the difference between taking visual notes with a pen on paper and taking them digitally? This was the very interesting question that was raised during the excellent workshop "The power of Personal Engagement" that Evelien Acun-Roos ran in Regional Scrum Gathering Ghent 2024. A couple of very good answers were given during the event. As I think the topic is super interesting I want to capture the key points here for everyone's benefit & maybe even add a few more 🙂 First of all: what's in a nutshell the power of taking written notes? To write we need to activate many more parts of the brain than we would by just listening. This enhances our focus & improves retention. If instead of writing words we draw something we stimulate even more our brain increasing even more that focus & retention. This applies to both the digital & analog world. There are also differences between the 2 medias though. Digital formats have certainly their benefits. They make your entire studio easily portable and they offer the ability to edit cheaply & indefinitely. The resulting work can be shared instantaneously without losing quality. All of this is great, useful and practical but doesn't help our brain. Writing on a physical medium instead stimulates our brain with many inputs that help making the experience unique, and so more memorable. Before, during and after. BEFORE To start with, writing on paper requires choosing what pen to use. We may always use the same or change everytime. Similarly, we are required to choose some colors. We also need to choose on what paper/block we will write and each has different size. DURING A pen moving on a piece of paper will produce resistence. How much and of what type will depend non only on the pen but on the paper. There are screens that try to simulate that on tablets but they can only simulate 1 single combo. When we draw we will be touching the paper, that has its own texture. The surface position will also change depending on whether we are writing on the first or last page of a block. Each type of paper has a special smell. That's true also for most pens. So while we draw we stimulate also our tact and sense of smell. When we want to change color, we literally have to change pen. We need to put down what we are using and pick up something else. That uses time and space, and again, asks our mind to make decisions, to think deeper. AFTER The final result is tangible. We can fold it, scrap it, burn it or hand it over to someone. We can hang it on a wall or collect it in a binder, maybe enriched with some post-its. We can even take a picture of it, like Evelien & I have done with her Scrum Master Playbook. Every experience will be unique and our brains saturated of rich information. We will often remember not only what we have written but also the conditions we were in when we wrote that something. Beyond having the memory of the data we will have also an emotional imprinting of their meaning.

You improve yourself at the edge, and this was certainly a learning edge for me. Sjoerd Nijland and I caught up in the Xebia studio to talk about Scrum, and how Scrum Lake provides a place for Self Care for Scrum Masters, Coaches and Product Owners: Scrum Lake addresses some of the limitations of traditional classroom training by fostering a more meaningful and engaging learning experience, self reflection and deep facilitated discussions. Using a metaphor of a lake to describe the Scrum framework, with the body of the lake representing the practices of Scrum, including accountabilities, events, and artefacts. The values of Scrum form the bedrock and Scrum Theory as sedimentary layers that underpin the practices. As we embody these values deeply, our practices come to life. Trust grows, with trust serving as the oxygen that enables the team to dive deep and explore the deeper aspects of the framework.
