Accessibility can only work effectively when seen as part of your digital transformation or modern 'target operating model' One of the aspects of accessibility less spoken about is how factors outside of the immediate: design, UX and digital team influence the success of efforts. Often, the overall success of the digital transformation (many organisations are still working on) can help or hinder accessibility. For example, how does the IT/Operations agility and underlying policies support your team getting the testing tools, environments and software they need? Do you have well defined and pragmatic remote working systems in place - how might this and other HR policies prevent people with disabilities, or other reasons for preferring home working, from joining your team? How much collaboration is there between Marketing, Brand and PR - especially in terms of offline activity and digital teams? You are only as good as the system you work within. To be continued...

#DDA24 Designing for Health & Wellbeing: "Design for health and wellbeing should provide innovative solutions but also critically examine or disrupt the systems that provide access to them."  Frank Kolkman is a critical designer, researcher, and educator who merges science and design in a provocative way of thinking. Interested in the implications of current and near-future technologies, his designs offer relevant possible solutions for the healthcare sector and involve patients in their own processes. His body of work consists of confrontational prototypes, interactive installations and scenarios that create disruption and aim to make groundbreaking concepts more accessible. Kolkman reflects on extremely urgent matters and the processes and systems that hide behind them, whether socio-economical, ethical or aesthetic. His strong research and innovation methods have the capacity to either advance a solution, or challenge and highlight an issue. Franks, winner in Young Designer #DDA17, will share his perspective on designing for Health & Wellbeing. Frank's work is experimental, deconstructivist and systematic. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in Design Interactions (MA), he's demonstrated his capacity to work with different disciplines and cultures. This shows in his projects, like Open Surgery (a do-it-yourself surgery robot), Designs for Flies (a kit allowing patients to develop medicines for rare illness themselves), Black Gold (for the preservation of endangered species of animals) and Outrospectre (about dealing with the experience of death with the help of technology). With SWAROVSKI, Frank presented Crystal Dream Machine, combining neuroscience, robotics, and the refractive properties of crystals to induce deep relaxation and 'artificial dreaming'. As an interface towards smarter ways to relax, it bridges the possibilities of smart living and its influence on our mental health for the better. He explored healthcare futures for Philips Experience Design, where he researched contemporary themes like technology access and ownership, on which he created practical implementations.

What power structures are inherent in your design system, and how does it perpetuate these structures? One of my favourite things is having theory (of any kind) applied to something you weren't expecting - here's a great example that properly made my brain fizz (in a good way!)

I concluded my last session for the first module of The Freelancers Academy Train-the-Freelancer programme yesterday. We covered how to deal with disruptors in class. During one of the role play for a scenario where a learner challenges the facilitator’s qualifications, someone made a remark - “huh really got so mean one?” So I started sharing some of my own horror stories when I first started training. 😆 As I shared, another learner asked “did you ever want to just break down and cry in class?” Of course! The fact that I was far from your typical smooth-talking trainer, had anxiety issues and really low self-confidence made it even worse back then. But 2 things made me stick through it: 1) Knowing my purpose for teaching 2) Believing that things would get easier with time I would keep telling myself this: If I can get through this class, I can get through anything. Anyway, my advice to avoid getting challenged by nasty learners as a trainer? Set the positive tone right from the start. Establish a relationship with the learners and of course, showing your credentials & experience help, a lot. I also actively seeked to attend as many other trainings as possible when I first started just to see and learn how other trainers did it. If you’ve been a trainer for awhile, what other tips & advice would you give to new trainers? PS: Thanks Renee Ismail and Azurah Jan for giving me this opportunity! I’m excited for the participants’ journey!
